At its core, GPT2 is a text generator. The AI system is fed text, anything from a few words to a whole page, and asked to write the next few sentences based on its predictions of what should come next. The system is pushing the boundaries of what was thought possible, both in terms of the quality of the output, and the wide variety of potential uses.

When used to simply generate new text, GPT2 is capable of writing plausible passages that match what it is given in both style and subject. It rarely shows any of the quirks that mark out previous AI systems, such as forgetting what it is writing about midway through a paragraph, or mangling the syntax of long sentences.

Is there an online instance where we can test it ?

Does it have the ability to generate valid citations to append to its texts? Because if not, I don't see why OpenAI is concerned about the implications of generating fake news if its unable to accurately source its own texts. The solution then becomes a case where journalists have to clearly define their sources to differentiate themselves from AI generated text. Alternatively they could create an AI which can analyze a text and speculate on potential sources which may have inspired it and in what context (the latter being the real challenge). In that way you would identify if a text was inspired in a way you'd expect from human thinking and not some AI imitating it.

Guess that's the next project they have to work on and then release both AIs into the wild once developed. Sword and shield distribution approach.
