The shitty /tv/ spoilers from a few months ago were true… We're all fucked!

 No.2282

http://archive.fo/y45uX

>The announcement, posted officially by Lucasfilm on Tuesday morning, added that Abrams will also co-write the upcoming film---and that his writing partner is Chris Terrio. That name will undoubtedly be less familiar to Star Wars fans, but the writer's legacy in film is a little more mixed, containing equal parts good (Argo won him a Best Adapted Screenplay Oscar) and the bad (he had the unenviable job of dragging the awful Batman V Superman script to the finish line).

>Okay, I just got wind of another one. Apparently, they're also considering some kind of Marvel vs. Star Wars crossover thing. To prove I'm not making this up, Disney actually already leaked the idea to the public as a means to test the waters and had Stan Lee do it for them since he would be least likely to elicit a negative reaction being the "Walt Disney" of Marvel.

>Thankfully, I don't think it will happen in live action, but it may end up as an animated direct to video or TV event thing with comic book and toy tie-ins. It came from the fact that someone high up in Disney thought it would be cool to see Darth Vader fight Iron Man. Yeah, Disney is ran by really deep thinkers. They also like that Guardians of the Galaxy already taps into space opera stuff and see crossover marketing appeal for both brands. All I've gotten for an explanation of how such a cross over could happen is that "worm holes" and different dimensions would be part of the plot line.

 No.2286

>We're fucked

Not at all. SW is over, in universe chronologically it's a closed universe that started with Tales of the Jedi and ended with the Legacy Era.

It was the movies and the EU.

Disney SW is a spinoff, something that i don't even bother to care.

>Star Wars Prequel Prequel Trilogy

>Yes, you heard me right. Disney is considering doing a trilogy that takes place before Lucas's original prequel trilogy. It will use a different numbering scheme than the current film series, although it hasn't been completely explained to me. Supposedly this series will go over the creation of the the force, jedis, how humans reached the Star Wars universe, etc. A lot of this will be eluded to in the Last Jedi, but it will be gone over in full detail in these new prequels if they're made. Lucas will have no input on the creation of the story or characters that will be used.

I knew Disney would fuck it all up, and I'd laugh but I didn't know it was going to be this funny. I hate nu-Wars and want to see it burn, perhaps in the ashes I will feel peace with all lore books and stories.

It would have been so easy for Disney to just continue on Star Wars just as it had been, perhaps it would have costed more but it would have been a beacon

That shit was infinities branded at the time which was the non-canon seal dictating that it would have no relevance or reference in other future EU or film media. Disney shit however will have no reason to follow this kind of guideline as long as they think it'll make them money.

 No.2342>>2364

>>2339

Also, Indiana Jones and SW is a better fit overall since Lucas had a hand in both, much like how ETs appear in Episode II, or those few non-canon Willow crossovers. Its a better fit when its all part of the same creator's vision. However, a major motion picture event between two unrelated franchises is just a retarded and uninspired idea made solely to trick easily amused moviegoers out of more money and its definitely a bigger blow to a brand's almost non-existent dignity than a simple one shot comic about wookie bigfoot.

This is what happens when you let young idiots fresh out of Deviantart design something they think will appeal to kids based solely on how many of hundreds of kids in a test room responded to several dozen mascot toys. These things were purely design with easy and cheap merchandising in mind rather than genuine creativity or simply being a happy accident that got popular. This is as bad, if not worse than the Ewoks.

Remember when you tried to get your classmates to call you "whiteagle" and they asked you what a white agle was? And you started crying and sperging out, telling them it's pronounced "white eagle," but they told you that didn't make a lick of sense because that would require an extra "e." And then you had to call your mom to come pick you up because the other kids made up a game at recess called "brown agle" where they'd hold you down and shit on you? Good times.

You might find yourself unpleasantly surprised. If Disney thinks that fans will go for a greater shared universe, they'll see no reason not to do it. That is indeed my point, though personally I don't think it being Disney-made will make things any better or worse.

>Remember when you tried to get your classmates to call you "whiteagle"

Uh, that never happened, mostly because people in real life don't give half a shit about me…

>>2488

>You might find yourself unpleasantly surprised. If Disney thinks that fans will go for a greater shared universe, they'll see no reason not to do it.

That's just it though, it's combing an already fairly nebulous canon surrounding a film franchise with the ever in flux "canon" of a comic franchise.

It's like mixing humid air with more air!

The foundation from either source isn't going to be solid enough to hold up the combination.

>It'll get plenty of fanart regardless because if there's one thing autistic manchildren can't get enough of it's crossovers, and that goes double for crossovers choking with lore gags.

Yeah, but that's going to happen regardless…

Snoke was one of the things I liked about the sequel trilogy. A powerful but disciplined antagonist stated to be a wise Dark Side disciple but also insinuated to have an intellectual respect for the utility of the Light. Twisted and mangled by the Force whose forbidden secrets he explored but perfectly happy to sacrifice an aesthetically ideal body to learn. Eyes still soft blue instead of blazing yellow. Interested in Kylo Ren because of his dual nature and not unadulterated darkness.

He was teased as having a more complex grey tinged perception of things maybe having something to do with his mysterious long life, but now that's all in the trash. All in the landfill with everything else that made Star Wars iconic according to this movie's very subtext.

And these themes are the most giga-kiked hyper kosher demoralization propaganda I've seen yet.

>Yoda burns the Force tree which held tremendous symbolic importance and tells Luke from beyond the grave that the Jedi have to end and it's time to move on to the vague, abstract future.

>Kylo allegedly killed Snoke to end the Jedi, Sith, and everything else associated with the past.

>Rey is descended from nobody important but she doesn't care because her parents are irrelevant. Only she matters and the fact that she is the Last Jedi means there will be Change (tm).

>Snoke was nobody familiar in disguise and his background will remain unexplored because it doesn't matter. He was the bad dude and that's the extent of his importance.

>Luke melds with the force after running out of Force Points and having no adrenals to inject happy that the Jedi have served their purpose and a New Thingy will replace them.

>The First Order is somehow more powerful than the Galactic Empire and the Resistance is dead and its New Republic on shaky knees, but it doesn't matter because something new will replace them.

<That's right, goy, your heritage is meaningless! Who gives a fuck about parents and identity? All that matters is YOU are a special unique snowflake and Mary Sue!

<Psssh, what kind of meshuggah cares about bubkis like history, traditions, and culture? It's all just thousands of years of doing the same silly primitive superstition and expecting things to get better! Throw it all out because PROGRESS is inevitable and desirable.

<Boy, all of those things that happened before these new and improved films sure do seem petty and meaningless compared to what (((we))) have in store for you now!

Best part is that Disney is aware of the fact these spoilers are making the rounds and has decided to not do an advance premier of the Han Solo spinoff movie because of them. It knows, and it's afraid.

Is this why the Director of this thing didn't seem proud of it? Because of Kathleen Kennedy's deranged obsession to leave her mark on Star Wars, and in so doing begin the slow death of the new golden goose? That the Sith-like selfishness has taken center stage over the selfless heroism and classic themes of the originals? That Snoke is no Emperor Vitiate yes, I would've accepted that?

I attended a panel a month ago about whether CBS or Disney had gone too far with their properties. The answer was effectively "no but yes" in PR speak. This movie will likely go down as one of the discussed "missteps." I don't see this as an attempt at propaganda, but the wrongheaded desire to "make Star Wars theirs" by attempted wipe-away is just as bad. It misses the damn point of this lived-in setting.

Vectivus may not have been real and Plagueis was less interested in the balance concept as a path to greater power and wisdom in the Force as a scientific principle that could be analyzed. This wasn't nearly as bad as everyone made it out to be. I did get worried for a minute when Laura Dern came in with literal purple hair and looked straight at the camera to deliver a #RESIST speech, but they made her more nuanced and killed her, so whatever.

I'd have cut a couple of corny/repetitive lines and trimmed way the fuck down on the porgs, if not outright removed them. Other than that, it was good and everyone is completely overreacting. There's literally nothing (other than Rey's empty arc, probably) that a half-decent fanedit couldn't resolve.

Did we watch the same fucking movie? For a board that loves the prequels so much, everyone sure seemed to miss one of the major themes.

>Jedi Order follow their code like instructions to be followed, as opposed to guidelines to be debated

>Order becomes stagnant as a result

>Become arrogant to the point of not being able to detect a Sith Lord a few miles from their temple

>Jedi and their way of life nearly extinct as a result

This, in my view, is where Legends and NuCanon diverge. It's a single choice Luke makes. In Legends, he creates a New Jedi Order, and rather than just making a carbon copy of the old, it's more of a community than a formal system. Emotional attachment is not discouraged, and they actually go out and do shit for the galaxy.

NuCanon instead has Luke repeating history, and once again, the Jedi are brought to the brink of extinction. He learns the same lesson as in Legends, but it takes him another 20 years Disney's just ripping off Legends again!" I agree, though I'm sure Disney would have loved to make direct adaptations of those books had our original cast not been senior citizens.. That's what TLJ is about. Something better can come out of looking at one's history and taking the good parts while leaving/fixing the bad. The lesson isn't "Oy vey, your history, traditions and culture don't matter goy!". The lesson is that blindly adhering to dogma will lead to the same successes AND the same failures. That's the EXACT OPPOSITE of history not mattering. If Rey/Nu Luke are disregarding history and traditions by trying to improve on what came before, so was Legends Luke.

Because it turns out, stagnation is a BAD thing. Christ, did none of you faggots ever read God Emperor of Dune?

That would be a good interpretation, but I don't know why you think Luke failed simply for trying to make a new Jedi Order, which looked more like Force-User summer camp at that point. Everything went to shit because he contemplated a preemptive beheading of a troubled teenager. Why would a much older and better traveled Luke do that after risking a slow and painful death to redeem Darth Vader?

Credit due for effort, but I'm having a hard time not reading into the subtext as this being a way to rip off the Band-Aid and wipe the slate clean of legacy characters before Disney goes off the deep end with episode IX and underwrites a series of porg movies. >Why would a much older and better traveled Luke do that after risking a slow and painful death to redeem Darth Vader?

Like I said, Nu Luke is repeating the mistakes of the past. He saw the darkness in Kylo and thought "Uh oh, dark side bad. Better kill him just to be sure!" When he realized his error in executing a boy who up to that point genuinely dindu nuffin, it was too late to go back and the cycle repeated itself. Watch the tree burning scene again. Luke says he's going to burn all of the ancient Jedi texts, hesitates, and Yoda takes care of it for him. Luke panics and tries to go inside to save the books, but he can't. Yoda then gives him a big speech about passing on everything, the good and the bad. I can't reconcile that with the idea that history and culture don't matter. (Vid related, their conversation)

As for wiping the slate clean, that's kind of their only option. We've already lost one of our classic trio, and the other two are (I think) older than Alec Guinness was when they shot IV. You're right about the subtext in a way, but try to take a less cynical view of it. A generation of people who grew up on the movies are now helming them, just like Rey grew up on stories of the rebellion and is now their de facto leader. VII and VIII have that sort of meta 'passing of the torch' element to the story.

I'm sure Disney would love to make porg movies. But Lucas made an Ewoks animated series and the Holiday Special, so if they do I'm not going to say it's a sin unique to them.

>After some years, the Republic starts getting its feet again

>At some point, the First Order shows up with an army of Stormtroopers bred and raised in secret

>Not wanting to fight another exhausting war, the Republic tries to appear amicable on the surface while secretly funding the Resistance

>First Order builds Starkiller Base. Where they got the resources and money I have no idea

Come to think of it, I think all of this is explained in the VII novelization. If you want something official to read that's what you're after. It also lends itself to Rey's character a bit more when she hears a voice telling her to kill Kylo towards the end. Or was that the script?

Star Wars and Warhammer are both immense in scale, have millennia long histories, and are constantly fraught with some of the most spectacular and destructive wars imaginable. On top of that, they both also feature corruption and purity battling for the soul of Man in the form of Spess Wizards and Warriors with nifty weapons and armor. Though 40K's own megalomaniacal narcissist seems to care more for his own race.

Hey, I'm the guy (not >>4337 though). Haven't posted since because I've been doing other shit. I recommended the book because that's where my info comes from, or I'm pretty sure having not actually read it. The only Nu stuff I've consumed has been the movies and Rebels since nobody currently under contract to write the books/comics can produce a paragraph of literary worth and EA can eat shit. I threw the book out for people who prefer the source rather than second-hand summaries. If I had posted a link to buy it, I could see your point.

The only time I go to Wookieepedia is if I have question about canon. I figured they weren't fans of the new stuff, since they spent years autistically documenting the EU before Disney trashed it.

I still think the movie was good. There was silly shit, like Leia's jump from 'can vaguely connect with certain others through the Force' to whatever the fuck that shit in space was. And some of the major characters didn't have much of a storyline (Finn/Rose are the biggest example, and Rey to a lesser degree). But it didn't offends me, I either shrugged it off or rolled my eyes. The rest of it I enjoyed more than I disliked the other stuff. TLJ isn't my favorite (that's RotJ), but it's good. I still think there's room for improvement that a competent faneditor can handle. I might do one when HD sources come out.

Porgs can go to hell, though. Every time they were onscreen, I heard Mel Brooks' voice distantly yelling MOICHANDIZING.

I'd mostly agree, but you could argue the same about I and V. I still enjoy them, though. Characters take priority over plot for me and I thought this movie had a lot of that.

<Luke is a bitter piece of shit who thinks that lthe galaxy needs to start fresh

>realizes that history is something to be learned from, not ignored, and that the Jedi still have a lot to offer and finds peace

<Finn spends most of VII and VIII as a bumbling fish-out-of-water bordering on comedic relief

>by the end, he's a confident Resistance hero

<Rey is a girl on a shitty backwater scavenging planet idolizing the Rebellion and Jedi

>now she's a Jedi, bringing hope to others the ay those stories gave her hope

<Kylo is highly conflicted, wants to be like Vader but has to kill a lot of sacred cows to get there

Because they know that wouldn't sell outside of a dedicated niche market which will subsidize it to support the cause instead of on its merits. By subverting and parasitizing off Star Wars, they trick some casual consumers and diehard fans into giving their agenda more money and attention in the short-term until their heavy handedness drives away the old market. Even if their profit motivated superiors at Disney kick them out for driving down sales, they'll simply look for another IP with name recognition to hijack.

They did it with television series, comics, and video games and have tried to do with tabletop RPGs. Like radicals hurling bricks through the windows of nearby businesses during a riot, they don't care about popular opinion or winning hearts and minds. They want to galvanize support from their base and win a war of psychological attrition with normal everday folks to cave into their demands and expectations little by little.

I haven't talked to anybody in my family or circle of friends who liked this movie. My stepfather, who is such an uncompromisingly left-wing ideologue that he thinks the Brits should give the Falklands to Argentina and Mexican kids should get reparations in addition to amnesty, thinks it's the single worst piece of shit ever produced under the Star Wars name. The progressive subtext isn't enough to persuade him to pretend it's anything more than a monument to bad decisions. My best friend told me that he thought it was "pretty good" before I saw it, but when I gave him my opinion after seeing the rips he admitted that he was severely inflating his regard in case I disagreed just because he knows what a tremendous SW aspie I can be. As for me, anons have lost their tendies at me on this board for me over wrongthink regarding some of the stuff released under Disney, but I have almost nothing good to say about TLJ.

Every important character, and most of the unimportant ones too, from the original hexalogy is dead except for Chewbacca and Leia. If not killed in a film, then more quietly in some parallel media tie-in like an e-book. I expect that Chewie is only alive to be the comic relief in a bunch of Porg shit, but they're going to have to do something about Leia being alive at the end of TLJ with Carrie Fisher's death.

The next movie is either going to have to stand on all-new characters plus Chewbacca reduced to the role of Jar Jar Binks or they're going to try the divisive CGI trick from Rogue One again. Lando almost certainly isn't coming back because they don't want Billy Dee upstaging John Boogayega.

 No.5744>>5757

>>5741

Part of me wonders if they intend on rewriting episode 9 with Luke being a Force ghost so that they can keep the "remember Star Wars?" aspect alive. And also because it's like poetry. Carrie's death definitely threw a wrench in the works, and I'm sure that quite a few of the executives' first thought on hearing of her passing was "well what does this mean for the next movie?"

Honestly, I have no idea where they can go from here. The "good guys" (never thought I'd see the day where I'd use sarcasm quotes about Star Wars protagonists) are down to less than a hundred people and maybe one ship, while the First Order lost Scarface and a bunch of ships but I'm assuming they still have plenty more resources. If we pick up right where TLJ left off, they'll have to figure out some way to write Leia out of the story pretty quick, probably too quick. They'll probably have to skip forward a couple years, but what would the situation even be at that point?

Christ, talk about trying to dig yourself out of a hole.
