/sw/ - Star Wars★

All of the Empire-centered new books that have come out I've enjoyed: Tarkin, Lords of the Sith, and Thrawn. I was going to use one of my Audible credits to download this expecting the pattern to hold. I haven't had any warnings transmitted my way yet about any outrageous cuckoldry in it.

I'm a total sucker for Imperials as protagonists, though, so it could be mediocre at best and I'd still claim it was good.

At the heart of it the book is just promotional material for the game.

The big problem is that Iden is so fucking flat as a character. She sees Alderaan destroyed and never questions it even slightly. She gets put on insane missions her team clearly isn't properly equipped, trained, or manned for and doesn't really care. She gets treated like shit by her CO but blames it on daddy issues.

You can say you want an imperial protagonist but Iden has literally no reason to be so pro empire outside of brainwashing that clearly can't have been that effective. She gains nothing from the empire. She has nobody she's fighting for. She has no tangible benefits when it comes to being the leader.

the guidlines thing isn't even new, george had the same set of rules regarding EU content. there was a general list of do's and don't's, other than that they were free to basically do what they wanted.

I think most of the authors and studios being employed by Disney to make this stuff have no idea how to make an Imperial character relatable. It goes against their impulsive need to inflict their black-and-white moralities and oversimplified political views on the Star Wars universe. Iden will never be a strong or interesting character because she was built from the ground up to be a (((progressive))) character in an organization that Disney has taken great pains to portray as literal Nazis-in-Space. She is empty because she was designed as a representation of certain political views rather than as a person, but she likewise has no context within the organization she is supposed to be a part of.

I would be extremely surprised if this were not the case. They might not have her full-on join the Rebellion, but I'm willing to bet that at one point she's going to be fighting her dad somehow.

Not trying to say Lucas was any better, but his laziness allowed us to get some really decent EU content that allowed for blurred moralities. I seem to recall one story in particular that talked about how Rebels baited the Imperials into attacking civilian targets (like orphanages, etc). I also don't recall Lucas forcing diversity hires into the front-and-center of every new piece of Star Wars media
