I'm going to be honest here, the New Jedi Order is abominable. The first one by Salvatore was fine, it introduced the new concept adequately, but every book after that felt exactly the same. It's just one extremely drawn plot with a series of meaningless miniplots. it's awful. I can't go on with it, reading book after book and knowing that nothing major is going to happen yet also knowing that the Vong will eventually be defeated. This should have been a single well-written trilogy max. I mean they had so much potential, growing up I dreamed of reading this series, and yet it's the most stale and boring thing I've ever read.

Originally the series was meant to be written around 5 main novels, with everything else in between being filler like Shadows of the Empire. It goes: Vector Prime, Balance Point, Star by Star, Destiny's Way, The Unifying Force

Not sure if this holds up as a reading order though. Some of the better character driven stuff ended up in other novels. If there's a single book out of the entire series worth reading it's "Traitor".

Even so, it can be hard to get into the series nowadays because it was very much a product of its time (Empire fatigue, invincible protagonists, most stories before it being self contained).

I seem to recall some butthurt from people at Dark Horse, especially Randy Stradley, that the novel guys took full control over the whole Vong invasion thing. Lots of people were upset by the handling of the concept, the edgy nature of the Vong and killing off Chewie & Anakin Solo.

The Invasion comic series was decent. Too bad it never finished.
