I haven't been keeping track of the (((Disney))) EU but I heard that you can literally just disable your hyperdrive settings to be able to go into hyperspace while in a gravitational field (like what they did in Rogue One and TFA). I hope it's not true, because otherwise I'd be fucking livid

Playing Empire at War really makes me realize that the Empire should build lots of little ships rather than few big ships.

 No.2004>>2009 >>2036

>>1995

That was actually a big part of the EU canon. Empire were geared for fighting well another Empire rather than fighting something like the Rebellion. What they needed more were ships like the Carrack Cruisers, which were insanely fast and heavily armed, perfect for Removing Rebel Scum. They needed ships that allowed them to dictate terms of engagement more and a lot of their design and combat doctrine was literally handing the Rebellion victories. One point of why Thrawn was respected and feared is that he knew this and so made heavy use of picket ships, gunboats and light Cruisers which fucked the shit up of his opponents.

Interesting part is that as soon as the Rebellion started taking worlds and having to hold them they began getting BTFO by Imperial forces, since all their ships were designed for hit and run or long range engagements, not close range planetary brawls which means they absolutely melted if they had to defend anything of value.

Indeed, Sheev really fucked himself over with his hard-on for the Tarkin Doctrine; Big intimidating Super Weapons mean jack shit if all you can do is annihilate your own damned planets with them…

What's worse is how big the disparity was between the two ends: Star Destroyers were the mainstays of the fleet and single-ship planet dominators that cost an entire system's GDP of Credits to make, while TIEs were cheap as fuck but really only a couple engines attached to heavy blasters with a cockpit (and bulky ass solar panels) bolted on.

TIE Fighters actually weren't as bad as everyone thinks. They were indeed outclassed by later Rebellion fighters but they were damned agile and maneuverable to the point if you had a heavily experienced TIE Fighter pilot vs a heavily experienced X-Wing pilot, the TIE Fighter would actually stand a good chance of winning.

TIE Fighters were designed for use by elite Clone pilots who could push it to it's limits, with the first of them appearing at the end of the Clone War. However when the Empire decided to mass conscript rather than use expensive trained clones well they instead became flying coffins.

>TIE Fighters were designed for use by elite Clone pilots who could push it to it's limits, with the first of them appearing at the end of the Clone War. However when the Empire decided to mass conscript rather than use expensive trained clones well they instead became flying coffins.

Problem is that no matter the skill of the pilot to make the most of that supreme maneuverability, they're STILL in a flying coffin…

I mean, I can understand skimping out on a Hyperdrive, only a hit and run fighter needs Interstellar range, and without a Hyperdrive you really don't need an Astromech to store your coordinates.

…But Shielding for a Fighter?

Even SITH Wars era Fighters had weak Deflectors, with only the Clone Wars V-19 Torrent, an EARLY war model mind you, being the only piloted fighter without shields.

For DROID fighters this make sense, you aren't out a whole lot if the Droid Brain goes down with the ship, but considering the time and resources it takes to train an Organic Pilot, you want to up their survivability if only to protect that investment.

On top of that, while this is mostly a personal gripe, WHY IN THE HELL ARE THE SOLAR PANELS SO DAMN BOXY AND TALL?!?!

Not only does it give the craft huge port and starboard silhouettes and reduce pilot visibility, BUT YOU ALSO NEED A DAMN EXTERNAL LADDER JUST TO GET IN!

 No.2015>>2017

They're radiators more than solar panels. They serve much the same function a the S-foils, albeit without the attached weapons like on the X-Wings.

>…But Shielding for a Fighter?

TIE Fighters are also ultra low sig, which means you won't actually detect them most times until they are right on top of you.

>Not only does it give the craft huge port and starboard silhouettes and reduce pilot visibility,

Good center of gravity when pulling G's and the pilots are surrounded by sensors. In a fight you'll need good sensors more than good eyesight.

>BUT YOU ALSO NEED A DAMN EXTERNAL LADDER JUST TO GET IN!

They are built for space and quick deployment. You can have a swarm of TIE Fighters out the hangar much faster than you could an X-Wing just by literally firing them out the Hangar.

In a perverse sort of way, the TIE Fighters would be some of the best Fighters for the Rebellion if the Rebels had carriers to spare.

Literally jump in, fire them out quickly before anyone could scramble their craft or deploy them in system from long range so they sneak up undetected the latter tactic was used by the Empire to surprise the Rebels. The Rebels would not know about the TIE Fighters in system until they were right on top of them

Yeah, they can never really make up their mind on that, can they?

Low signatures mean nothing if you go up like a powder-keg from a glancing micro-meteorite strike…

>They are built for space and quick deployment.

How do they deploy quickly when the thing has clearance LITERALLY AS BIG AS A HOUSE?!

At the very lease they could have vertically squashed and horizontally stretched the panels…

Here is the result of one grillion hours in GIMP!

There's a scene at the end of the new "Thrawn" book where Sheev and Thrawn exchange dialog about it. Thrawn point blank speaks freely about super weapons being a relatively poor investment since they have to be transported from system to system compared to the relative mobility of capital ships and starfighters. Sidious just chuckles in Dark Side and insists that the psychological impact of his precious Star Destroyer will make a bigger fleet unnecessary therefore being cost-effective and preserving lives in the long run. Thrawn just kind of drops the subject.
