I remember hearing that Edwards was originally willing to compromise and have characters survive for a sequel, but Disney actually gave him the go ahead to kill them all.
You can tell a lot of deaths got added in reshoots simply because of how ridiculous they are. The two asian guys managed to dodge a shit ton of enemy fire until suddenly they don't. Mexican guy and Ayy Rebel step outside into the blast zone instead of looking for cover. Imperial dude is ok until it turns out grenades can apparently blow up whole ships now.
I completely hated most of the cast, but a lot of them felt like they really did have their character arcs just abruptly cut short. Having someone go on about the force and have a saber crystal and then having them die with nothing coming of it is unsatisfying in the extreme. Likewise if you're gonna set up Mexican guy as being a huge unlikable team killing dick and then try to bring it back it helps if you give him a scene where he does something actually good instead of just running around with the main characters.
You could probably change most of that just by reshoots again, ironically, but it's still unsatisfying if someone's a dick through the whole movie then gets marginally better five minutes before they die for reasons that have nothing to do with their arcs.
