If you're looking for a JRPG with a customizable party, it's hard to find one bigger than this. I have 370 party members on my file for parts 1 & 2, and that doesn't include some route exclusives. It's an RPGmaker game, yes, with the stock interface, but they stretch the content as far as they can manage. You recruit party members through story events and fighting monsters in the wild that might offer to join your party when you beat them. You can recruit just about every enemy in the game, with some story exceptions. Every party member has a unique trait like boosting the power of certain skills or attacking multiple times in one turn, and each one has a job and race you can change depending on the character. Jobs and races grant access to different skills, abilities, and passive bonuses, along with stat modification. Abilities can do things like boost stats, modify the encounter rate, or provide status resistances. You can equip any abilities learned by each party member at your own discretion. Leveling up jobs and races gives access to new skills and abilities, and maxing them grants access to more advanced jobs and races with better bonuses. Mastering Magician and Martial Artist, for example, lets the character take on the Magus Fist job.
If you haven't gotten into Paradox yet, I wouldn't recommend downloading 2.20 until we get a good interface/translation patch. As far as a full translation goes, we won't be getting that far for years to come. Adult Alice doesn't appear yet outside of a superboss encounter, so we'll probably see her when part 3 comes out.
