Years and weeks seems like a pretty long time. Surely by at least the second week of uncontrolled spread evacuations would be enacted in a city, and for a small village a matango infestation would have to be recognized immediately due to everyone knowing everyone until a few people go missing. Matango also need to spread quickly, as they aren't very subtle.
