Imagine a sad elf mage, she's crying because she misses her human grandfather and the kingdom she lives in is near its end. Her grandfather is the famous wizard Merlin who has passed away and the kingdom of Camelotis fading into memory. Being an immortal elf girl, she's sad that she would outlive everything she would come to know. How do you make an immortal feel better?

Give her children of her own. At least she wont be alone.

Get lost in her magical studies together. Elven snuggles may ensue depending. We both have a great love for knowledge because mages by the nature of their profession should have a love of knowledge and learning so I imagine it wouldn't be super hard to get her to go mad over her studies and me, fingers crossed.

>Your great great great great great great grandchildren would be able to talk and play with your waifu just like the days when your first children were with her

This is a great plan.

Okay. But this is only a short respite from loneliness from her perspective. Unless you were to become a powerful enough mage that you could grant your own immortality.

Become a lich so you can live forever too.

Now, imagine the husband is also immortal; except he cannot die by any means what so ever. He and his waifu will both live for a long time, but eventually she will die by some means that he cannot control. So as a result he will try to control her life and ruin their love.

Imagine knowing that you could spend forever with your waifu, but one little mistake would kill her and spare you. One day she will die by some cosmic alignment. After all, probability states that given enough time and resources anything can happen.

immortality a la perpetuals in WH so the husband can still "die" but he won't stay that way. It's the first thing that came to mind with true immortality because Legion is such a good book

Read some LOTR.

Seriously, the trilogy and then some stuff in the expanded lore is pretty much the handbook for human/elf relationships. Personally, I would hate to have a waifu that stayed young and beautiful while I aged. Not for any superficial reasons, mind you. Only because it would break my heart to see a woman with so much life in her future to be shackled to a decrepit geezer that only has death to look forward too.

Just set her free. Tell her to remember the time you spent together and to cherish the love you shared, but grant her the strength to move on. Odds are it will be a few centuries before she even thinks about replacing you. Give or take a few depending on if kids are in the mix.

Yeah, surprisingly it only comes up during discussions like this. Almost any other MG topic I can talk about in the most cheery of terms. It only seems to be elves that bring out the melancholy in me. I just hate the idea of keeping beauty like that captive for such a selfish reason. Maybe I'm just thinking too hard about this, but it's like when I was a kid and my parents got me some caterpillars to keep in a terrarium. I watched them grow and metamorphosise into Butterflies. I watched them fly around and marveled at their beauty, but I knew they wouldn't be happy being kept by me forever, so I let them go. Though it is her decision to stay, I would rather not cause her undue suffering by having her stay to watch the man she loves slowly fade away. It would break her heart and mine would break for her. Goddamn elves, why must they produce such complicated feels in me?

It's a shame claiming hesdcannon here would feel like a cop out. The thought does make me feel sad actually. Can you imagine watching anyone and everything you ever loved just slowly fade away or die? That's enough to drive anyone mad. Whoever can stand being immortal in a world of mortality is incredibly strong,

The end goal for any self respecting wizard is obviously immortality and then godhood.
