An executive at the production company that holds the Kemono Friends IP fired the director of the first season for the second season out of nowhere for no adequately explained reason. Seeing as the guy had a cult following and is credited as the sole saving grace after KF's rocky start, fans rioted. Stock is tanking, future of the franchise is in jeopardy, and it might be too little too late to just bring the original team back with an apology.

That's pretty much it. The reason for firing the whole team is unknown.
They hired a new professional team and new famous VAs for a second season, so they might've just dumped them to try and milk it better with a brand name™ team.
There's also that story that the KF director wanted to make an unofficial OVA, which angered the company director since he wouldn't get any money out of it, making him fire the director.
There's no official confirmation for either, and there probably won't be, but I wouldn't doubt that it's both, considering how retarded suits are.

I've heard there's been company leaks on 2ch that suggest there was a disagreement on how to handle the story in season 2, which got Yaoyozoru shitcanned and Tatsuki shortly after. Those two were basically the entire fucking show, so S2 totally crashed and burned. Kadokawa reportedly likes to keep a really tight leash on their IPs so it was either their way or the highway.
The whole thing is pretty disgusting, and the "Speak on our behalf or never work in the industry" damage control is certainly not doing them any favors.

This is very incorrect from the start. It was not a mango but a mobile game and accompanying properties (manga, anime, etc.). The game tanked and all properties were rolled up, but the time slot for the anime had already been confirmed. So the publishing committee, headed by Kadokawa, changed it to 3DCG, allocated it to an unknown new director (Tatsuki) and gave it close to zero budget then sent I out to die.
Tatsuki did not, however, accept that he should be it’s gravedigger. Using his unbelievably small budget, he gathered 10 animators, cut corners wherever possible, hired unknown voice actresses, etc. He made something that he could be proud of, even though everyone expected it to bomb.
It did not die as expected. The love that Tatsuki put into it yielded the response it got, and instead of dying it sold out on Amazon and warranted a second press of discs. (This NEVER happens with any but a few very popular IPs, and certainly never to a 3DCG series.)
Fast forward to a few days ago, when Tatsuki shared the news that he had been removed from the Kemono Friends directorship and cut loose. His studio resigned in protest (a very risky move because this is likely to get all of them blacklisted). Kadokawa’s stock price ranked as fan responses ranged from bewilderment to rage. The official reason that Kadokawa gave was that Tatsuki had worked on a bonus short to thank the Kemono Friends fans, which he funded out of pocket as a kind of semi-doujin project. The Japanese fans are not buying this explanation, as it has little precedent and all previous indications were that the production committee had said “do whatever you want”.
The current speculation simply seems to be that, having suddenly come into possession of a golden egg, some set of suits in Kadokawa decided to be Big and Important and run a “total capture” on the Kemono Friends IP. This is quite a routine albeit scummy move in e.g. Hollywood, but in this particular case it was even less fair because it was Tatsuki and his 10 autist animators plus a crew of no-name VAs that turned shit into gold with no support from anyone else on the defunct production committee. (Original game’s character designer was also influential for along super-cute designs but he was not even slightly involved in the anime’s production and was by all indications already disassociated from the project when the mobile game was rolled up.)
I personally plan to boycott the buyfagging of any IP that flows through Kadokawa, and I encourage all anons to do the same.

So now I have binge watched Kemono friends s1. It was good. It really had an effect on me, starting out with "Oh my god, this animation…". It was good. Shoebill-chan was an ubercutie, and I was surprised by Lion and Moose's relationship. And that ending… Nothing beats it when the main theme plays during a battle. This series really has the deepest lore. Hululu surprised me the most. Such an airhead. She'll really need somebody strongminded like Grape-kun to keep her safe, huh? I'm really looking forward to season 2, and I hope Takeshi will return directing it. He deserves it, considering what he made here and how much work was put in. All in all, it was a damn good watch.
