It's the same plot.
except a little bit more quirky and more character driven than 1984.
In 1984, it focuses on Winston and rather interesting affair with coworker in a totalitarian government. She tries to get him fight against the government. But the government finds out and kills her and punishes him to the point of pacification. In Brazil, it focuses on a man that isn't content with his boring life and meets a coworker and has an affair with her. She's a part of rebel group trying to dethrone the current government. He tries to escape his mundane life by joining the rebel group but the government finds him and kills his girlfriend. Instead of torturing him, he suffers from a psychotic break and he lives with his girlfriend in a home in the woods. The main difference between the movies is that Winston wanted to remember the past and break free from the tyranny of that oppressive government. In Brazil, the man wants to break free from the chains of society and do something exciting.
