I can start to describe my problems with it. To sum it all up, it's lazy. A majority of the development work is already done, the movement, inventory management, saving, majority of sprites, combat, etc. is already completed for the developers. All they have to do is modify a few things, and build what is unique using an already existing framework. You would think that this would allow for:
1. A much faster development cycle
2. Better stories, writing, and general characterization
3. Good artwork as it is the only thing they really have to pay for
But consistently, RPG maker games fail in all three categories. They take as long as any normal game to complete, or they release 5 versions of a game in which they change little and put in little effort. The writing is consistently teenage fan fiction tier, with no real characterization, opting instead to just steal characters from their original work and add nothing to them other than a lust for dick. Finally, the artwork is consistently garbage. Western garbage. These artists wouldn't get upvotes on their deviantart pages but yet they think that their artwork (in which they are drawing stolen, already designed characters) or made in some 3D platform with already-created bodies and just modified hair qualifies to be in games where the art should be one of the few foci. They earn far too much money for the "effort" they put in, and "their" "games" deserve to be viewed with extreme scrutiny because of how little they actually had to do to make them. The exact same goes for Renpy. Don't even get me started on how the poor writing and use of the same engine and sprites make them all look like unoriginal samey releases, but that is another point.
