Trying to upgrade from from text-only HT game development, would this be enough to be considered an upgrade? Probably the limit of my 'programmer art' skills

Probably, Even something small like that is enough to give off of semblance of what the text might look like visually

And the fact that you're even doing that makes you better then 90% of text games already

Good job but would be better with higher hips-to-shoulder ratio. Now look too masculine. Or a different pose. Check out old DOS games to see how they managed to keep women feminine even at low rez.
