You don't need a straightener, it destroys your hair. If you use one buy at least a good and not cheap model.
Otherwise I recommend intensive haircare. I have 3 main conditioners and moisturizers and one hair oil. It helped me to get the hair curly instead of having some afroamerican hairstyle. I thought this would be impossible, it isn't, you just need to work on it every day.

Longest I ever got it was to my mid-back before my family started criticizing me for having it so long. At one point I donated 12 inches to locks of love and could still put it in a low-pony

pretty sure those are your only two options to straighten hair. you can use heat protect spray to prevent damage to your hair, also the GHD straighteners only heat up to 180 degrees which they claim is the minimum temp to straighten hair but not hot enough to cause damage (could just be marketing speak though)

Conditioning can help and I use a hair serum called Control Freak by Bedhead, the serum also claims to protect hair from heat so I straighten it on a low/medium heat. (I know my hair is super frizzy, I don't look after it enough and haven't had it cut in too long)
