It's the one thing I'm noticed is that the characters all seem to be from the same mold in terms of things like eye shape and face proportions, and nothing else about them really shows their personality while this fan art at least tries to make them look more unique. The humor is extremely subtle, and without a solid grasp of theoretical physics, most of the jokes will go over a typical viewer’s head. I didn't understand how something could have just come out and already have as many episodes as TTG until I watched a couple of minutes of it. Or maybe the kids love it so much that they are more serious about lying convincingly than kids normally would be. Or maybe the kids do tell their parents and their parents assume they are making up stories since it all sounds so ludicrous.

Seems like the monsters were already on the island. The witches don't control them. The monsters are afraid of them since they are rebellious teenagers with magic powers. My guess is whatever attracted the witches to the island is also the reason monsters are there, i.e. it has a powerful manna density or is on some special leyline conducive to magic or some junk.
