But don't you like comedy? Those are FUNNY, anon. Why do you hate fun? xD
No.996438
Everything is comedy these days. EVERYTHING.
That new film coming out? It's [Genre] + Comedy.
That new book you're looking forward to? [Genre] + Comedy.
New television show? Comedy
New game? Comedy
New album? Comedy
Abso-fucking-lutely everything being made is now a comedy in some form and it is utterly mind-numbing. We are all immersed in the same ocean of low-end background radiation "comedy" in order to keep everyone quiet. Comedians tell us that comedy is the highest form of art, that comedy is the ability to transfer emotion. This is nonsense, comedy is the very lowest, basest, form of art because laughter is universal. You don't need to understand comedy directly to laugh, you just need to see other people laughing, or hear them. Injecting comedy into absolutely everything has lowered the tone of media dramatically and most people can't even see it happening because, hey, everyone likes to laugh right? What's wrong with laughing? Man I must be such a stick in the mud amirite ladies? *laughtrack* Comedy is the death of creativity because the "Comedy" we are all being served is observational. It is only half a step above 20s slapstick. Jokes are funny. 90 minutes of people dressed in day-glo colors punching eachother while reeling off quips that are essentially fart jokes is perverse.
Honestly, I think people in charge of shit like that are just afraid to take anything seriously.
No.996443
>>996438
I don't think I'd even call it actual comedy either, since The Three Stooges did all of it better. It's this weird mix of not wanting to be taken seriously while also taking a lot of effort to make sure you understand not to take them seriously. It's insincere and tryhard.

No.996464
>>996438
I don't think they're afraid of seriousness, so much as they're afraid of the consequences of seriousness, specifically in regards to criticism. As a creator, if someone says your work is shit, that's going to hurt more if it's work that you're deeply invested in and genuinely care about. Creators who are serious about their craft learn to deal with this. They learn to analyze critique, learn to discern between criticism which should be heeded and that which can be safely discarded. Most "creators" today are products of academic institutions which coddle them, and as a consequence serious criticism is an unknown and frightening thing to them when they arrive in the real world.
I'm convinced that this is a huge part of why post-modern/ironic/hipster/etc. creators gravitate toward comedy and "bad on purpose" creations. Comedy and irony are simply being used as convenient shields against criticism. Your project turns out well and people like it? You get to bask in the positive attention. Your project turns out shit and people tell you so? You get to claim that it's totally like that on purpose, and the detractors are just taking it too seriously.
TL;DR Serious creators understand that criticism and having their feelings hurt is a normal part of growing and improving. The hacks that dominate the entertainment field of today are more concerned with protecting their egos than with putting out a quality product.

I feel kind of bad for Matt Groening. I might not like modern Simpsons, but he has to be the Simpsons. He's sort of like a severely typecast actor at this point. Any project he does has to be "The Simpsons in $SETTING". Futurama was the "Simpsons in Space" and now we're getting the "Simpsons in Generic Genre Fantasy Land". He isn't even allowed to change the artstyle. Or worse yet, he can't. The Simpsons may be a zombie, but so is Groening's artisic career.

Not exactly, no. But it follows a very similar comedic format heavily dependent on parodic and satirical cultural references interspersed with more serious moments of generally interpersonal drama not dependent on an overarching series plot. It had a very similar feel, if you understand what I'm getting at. I'd bet quite a bit of money that this new project will be basically the same thing, just in a different setting. The fantasy world will probably be full of veiled and not so veiled references and parodies thereof. There will be a lot of jokes derived from the broadly drawn characterizations of the various characters (perhaps well done, perhaps late Flanders). There won't be an overarching series goal or plot a la "Find the Lost Thirteen Treasures of Rule". And as a result there probably won't be much serious character growth.
None of that is necessarily bad, but it will be more of the same. Even if it's executed very well Groening almost certainly won't deviate too much from the formula which has brought him so much money, and maybe he isn't even capable of it anymore. Like I said, they didn't even mix up the artstyle.

How about making a fantasy setting that looks like fantasy instead of renaissance fair with fairy tale creatures running around? Like you see this goblin guy? He is supposed to be an elf. And I'm sure that if there will be any dwarves, they will be annoying bearded kids in pointy hats instead of stocky vikings.

There is still straight up fantasy, but it tends to be tie-ins to tabletop RPGs or vidya, and I honestly couldn't recommend reading 20 mediocre to okay novels just to get the full backstory on the ones that are good. Or it's some "epic" series where the author is writing thousands upon thousands of pages and barely advancing the plot.
Honestly at this point if you want fantasy you're better off asking /tg/ what they like over worrying about what's new. Robert E. Howard's Conan is solid, so is Moorcock's Elric novels. Anything by Gene Wolfe is a good read. Hell, even fucking manga is good fantasy. Goblin Slayer is only a deconstruction in as much as it's main theme is "even scrub monsters are still monsters."

Biki armor wasn't really much of a thing outside of MMOs and niche titles like Soul Calibur. As far as I remember, only exceptions to that were RPGs (both vdieogames and p&p). They had tendency to just mix random fantasy elements - probably based on what creators liked - whether it made sense or not. But I do not recall seeing much crap like that outside of MMOs after mid to late 90s.

There's no way Groening's tired old tropes can work with a female main protagonist. How come they haven't figured that shit out by now? Oh wait… it's the current year.
Homer, Fry (protagonists) :
>naive
>overconfident
>wasn't given a great hand in life
>good morals but easily tempted
>still tries to do the right
>lovable, failures are meant to be relatable .
>we're meant to see the world trough their eyes
Females:
Marge:
>Over-qualified for her chosen position.
>Tries to play tropes straight (mother and home-maker), and ends up being-overstressed because of it . "subversions, lol"
>is overly moralising, more often than not ends up being wrong (contrast to early Simpsons)
Lisa, Leela
>marry Sues
>strong womyn
>subvert all the tropes, still end up being right.
>only wrong when they try to play tropes straight.
Princess Bean (our current protfag):
>naive
>overconfident
<was give everything in life.
<subversive yet whiny moralizing tone that tries to mask self-centerd-ness.
<subverts all tropes
<still ends up being right about everything because Marry Sue
>has vices (beer)
<but are presented as virtues because rebellion is cool, yo.
<no flaws = no character arcs except proving how much the rest of the world sucks and is wrong for not listening to her.
>real people (I said real people, not feminists) are supposed to identify with this and find it funny.
Just once I'd like to see a story with a female protagonist that plays the tropes straight:
>modern day female:
>has seen too much crappy fantasies.
>tries the "strong womyng thing"
>meets examples of where the path leads.
>learns real world is real.
>swallows her pride
>flash forward seven years latter.
>happily married, tucking her daughters is bed

I'm on episode 4 and it's like this show has no idea of what it wants to be.
Does it want to be high fantasy? Not really. Too little magic.
Mid-fantasy? Nope, too grounded in low-fantasy with not enough magic.
Low fantasy? Nope, too many magical humanoid races.
Elfo doesn't even keep his motives from from the first episode and just tries getting into Bean's pants.
The world isn't even all that interesting. It's just really microscopic and plays way too safe so you're not expecting anything outside of a low-fantasy setting, overcommit to it, then throw in a ton of modern stuff. If you're paying attention and not just letting it be background noise you'll get confused.
Theres the occasional funny moment but it's so brief. Then then there are jokes that are just predictable and go on for way too long.
Theres tons of animation errors too, characters appearing huge on backgrounds, walk cycles not matching walking speed.

I just saw the first three episodes and I have a few complaints. Compared to the first three episodes of Futurama this had maybe two jokes that worked (but didn't make me even chuckle).
Here are the problems:
1. Bean's arc could have lasted a whole season but it's basically closed by the second episode. She could have had a real crisis of conscience about whether her own freedom is more valuable than the safety of the kingdom and then have the pig transformation save her from willingly sacrificing herself for the greater good. Instead she never wavers from her initial instinct, which makes her less sympathetic as a character.
2. King Panucci is just a grumpy king with olde-worlde ideas about women. The only jokes involving him are about how numb he is to the concerns of others, especially women. Kind of one-note.
3. Elfo's characterization is thrown out the window by the second episode. His complete naivete' and desire to feel things other than happiness means he should be stupidly brave in every situation, like Data when he gets his emotion chip. Instead he becomes a loyal sidekick that lusts after women twice his height for no reason. If he had a moment with Bean like Fry did when he saw the earth with Leela on the moon, there might be some reason he sees her in a romantic light. He should be like GIR in that every new sensation is greeted with enthusiasm.
4. Mr. Game & Watch shouldn't even exist. He doesn't have an arc, he's basically a less-charismatic Bender. The two people who keep commenting on his progress shouldn't exist either. Who is going to identify with a being of pure evil aside from edgy assholes…wait…nevermind. At least Aku has a funny, hammy way of acting.
5. Almost every joke falls flat because the timing is wrong. I can see each joke coming, arriving, and going. Abysmal.
I will probably get around to watching the other episodes (the background art is amazing) but will probably remain stone-faced as I am now.
No.1016795
>>1014114
It would be a great arc if she had a sort of switching lives thing happen where she could be a princess but had to sacrifice her freedom. That would be compelling. Why Bean is so unhappy despite having everything seems to only be there because story has to happen and her mom is dead.
No.1016835
finished watching it, easily the weakest thing Matt's ever made, that being said, not nearly as bad as it could of been.
>Bean
My major fear with her, was that they would of just fallen for the pit fall of basically making her a man too show "look wumunz canz be grossest too!!!!" while at the same time making her basically invincible from the get go. Avoided for the most part and left with a genuinely complex character.
Trailers does no justice to the show, made it out as tho the entire series was going to be her running away from her evil patriarchy dad who wants to marry her off. But in-reality this ends by the second episode and they essentially turn it into an episodic series with minor serialization.
By far the best character through the entire thing is the King, (((ZOG))) easily the best constructed in terms of layers and is also the funniest by a mile and a half.
For some reason, the first episode is so much fucking worse then everything else in the season, i don't know the behind the scenes stuff but there is noticeably bad sound mixing, writing, and animation. Clears up by the second episode tho.
Overall, some of the best episodes from the ten that are out now are better them some of the worst that futurama had, and you'll constantly be making comparisons between the two in your mind simply because of how similar they are. Cohen took a back seat role with this project supposedly, but everything from the pacing to the constantly changing settings reeks of futurama

If they wanted to go that route, they should have made a show about a fictionalized historical figure. France, England, and Germany had a few nutters who would be perfect for a comedy.

Yeah…it felt like they had planned this over two seasons and ended up cramming t into a handful of episodes.I'd refer it to not have some weird over reaching super deep plot actually. I liked the gritty life in medieval-ish times stuff more than badly the magic shit.
>>1016901
That Griffin was some weird out of place shit. Then he swoops in and saved them from the fall..lazy as hell. At least do an episode where they save his next of help his people or any reason why he cares to rsavecthrm and fly them back. Why does he give a crap about the characters other than them being main characters? It's like they went zombie Simpsons.
>>1016794
Great post. It bugged me Robo was swearing like next episode.wished we'd seen him slowly discovering the seedy underbelly of life.
Skip the self proclaimed sexual tension bs, or at peast wait until we know the brackets enough to care.
Yeah the demon obviously they had no idea where to go with that. Give us a reason why he stopped blatantly trying to force events/bad actions like he can grow to care but slowly fades away if he see or something! He's wasted.
I laughed twice in all the first season. Once at the victor of the battle of that time a bird flew inside and can't remember the other.
…
What a mess this shit is. They squandered the season cramming in all that oh Spooky magic lore plot rather then letting us get to know the characters and finding their comedy grounding and letting the style for the show settle naturally. If they wanted to piggy back from Adventure Time they should remember the single episode adventures were the good episodes and it hit the downhill crap slide when they went for melodrama and deepest l o r e.
I guess they figured the audience was too fickle and stupid to slowly build the show and plot/characters up. No second season unless they shoved in some death and plot plot plot. We only hadv10 episodes to get to know these characters…we really supposed to care about one dying and how otyers react to that? Maybe if they had Work go to Luci's demon world in limbo between life and death give us a side plot to actually use the demon as a character and something interesting going on while the dumb, obvious as hell „twist“ family melodrama magic shit goes on.
Also the music never fits the scenes. The theme music sucks.

but almost nothing’s funny anymore, everyone spends all day on websites and apps desperately trying to hunt down something funny, we’ve emerged ourselves in a meme culture that’s soul purpose is to make content that’s funny. Everything always has to be comedy or funny, that’s why it’s impossible to get us to laugh. Almost nothing is serious or genuine. All any art is now a days is comedy, or political content or both. Every movie has at least one comic relief, atleast. This is why comedy sucks today too. Everything this is a joke. There is nothing to make fun of, since it’s all a joke.

Show me one instance where we're the PC stuff is satirized and not the Dnd magical world in which it's put. Hint: you can't
<[citation needed]
Alright . 0/10 for making me rewatch the clip and make a panel.
Look at the second panel. That's not satire of humor. It's normalization . We're not supposed to have any reaction to it except maybe "heh, a gryphon is saying gender is a spectrum." The oddest part is the gryphon, not the "gender is a spectrum" . Ideally, you're just supposed to think nothing of it at all and let it slip into your subconscious mind-sponge. The same kind of tactic girls do when they 'happen to mention something' for 'no reason at all', and then move to something else. Not direct. Not overt.Devious. Jewish. Anyway, continuing about the joke, the second panel serves no purpose. There's no punchline to it, so you might as well remove it. It's not there to be part of the joke, it's just a quick wink to normalize. If they wanted to make a satire of PC and give the second panel a reasonable purpose, they could have made the fourth panel, "the reason the species is going extinct" because the gryphin is actually a man, or because he believes 'gender is a spectrum' . Instead we get: "because these days men prefer to fornicate with something other than a giant bird Heh?"
Any further questions?

I just checked the famous buck-toothed characters in animation (except the Angry Beavers) and they all had the buck teeth be part of the normal row when speaking so it doesn't look weird.
I also wanted to say I'm up to the 7th episode and it's really boring. The show is so slow-paced that none of the jokes land. Even the psychedelic sequence was boring. This show is very inconsistent with its own mythos since you would expect people would be using magic much more in their daily lives (or wage a war against it like in Diablo). I might say they use it for the sake of jokes, but what jokes?

Holy hell, I just realized how much better the show would be if the personalities were mostly reversed.
If Bean was the naive one (that only gets saved from marriage by Lucy's discouragement) her character would actually have development. Imagine if she was mindlessly following her family's wishes until the wedding and then decided to rebel. The rebellious teenager is a relatable character. Then each episode would be HER discovering the depraved side of Dreamland much to the audience's mutual surprise. This would be the beginnings of a hero if she loses her innocence.
If Elfo's banishment from the Keebler Elf kingdom was punishment instead of the hanging, it would give his small stature an appropriate sense of terror about the outside world. He would rush on purpose to the nearest sign of order which would be Dreamland, so he would have an actual reason to be there instead of wandering there by accident. He would be resentful of his banishment until he meets Lucy, who mistakes him for the prince. It turns out Lucy was commissioned by demonic cultists to stop the marriage of Bean to the prince (for political gain), but gave Lucy very little clue as to what to do, and Lucy is a very ignorant demon in general.
So Elfo suggests Lucy find the biggest "tree" in the village which is where important events are. They sneak in due to their small statue (Elfo tags along because he's nervous in this new place) and Elfo immediately spots the wedding cake. He tastes a taste of home while Lucy hunts for the prince. He stumbles into Bean's chamber and she is trying to suppress her feelings about the wedding. Lucy tries asking Bean about the whereabouts of the prince but Bean takes his probing questions as a profound questioning about her pampered lifestyle.
Eventually she thanks Lucy for the talk and decides to do the first rebellious thing in her life and refuse to marry the prince. But the king and his guards drag her out before she can take off the gown and everyone rushes into the cathedral for the main event.
Bean is being led down the isle, she whispers to her father that she needs to talk. Her father reminds her of the importance of the marriage to the kingdom, and she tries interrupting him. Meanwhile, Lucy is stalking the prince already at the altar with a dagger, but a member of the crowd spots Elfo having eaten the cake and screams, pointing at him. Everyone stops and the King yells at the guards to get the elf. In the commotion, Lucy's outstretched dagger gets knocked out of his hand and is stuck to the trapdoor lever. He tries pulling the dagger out just as Elfo hides under Bean's dress and the lever is pulled when Lucy pulls the dagger out. This causes the wedding rug over the trapdoor (established earlier in the episode as being used and covered up with the rug) to fall through the door along with Bean, Elfo and Lucy (after staggering back onto the rug when he pulled the dagger out forcefully). Bean grabs and slides down the absurdly long carpet with the other characters as it drapes down just over the water like a bungee cord.
The characters dangle close to the water. Elfo asks what happened. Lucy first expresses disappointment, but then they all see the to-be prince falling down, proclaiming that he will save her but instead falls at a lethal speed into the water. Bean then replies that Lucy saved her from that marriage. The trio drop onto the floating cake table below and ride the waves to shore to begin a new life of freedom.
This creates a much better character dynamic. Bean is the newly-rebellious teenager that is pampered, naive but enjoys new experiences. Elfo is the rebellious troublemaker with a good heart. Lucy is the devil that tries being a bad influence but his plans always go awry due to his ignorance and bad luck. They're all ignorant of the world and as such get into lots of misadventures. Sounds more funny?

Continued…
Bean would approach every situation in Dreamland with the kind of idealized naivete that being born into royalty would bring, leading to lots of awkward situations with the downtrodden peasants. Her default approach is optimism.
Elfo would approach every situation in Dreamland as being ready to fight or flee due to the world being much grimmer and uglier than his homeland. His default approach is pessimism.
Lucy would approach every situation in Dreamland as an opportunist, compelled by his demon nature to sow misery and sin wherever he goes. But his frustration due to every attempt accidentally making things better (due to how crappy the world already is) drives him to stick around with the other two since only they seem to get that he's a demon so at least he feels some respect there.
