This was a thing in the 80's and early 90's BECAUSE it was the 80's and early 90's. Nothing to do with sexual orientation, those colours just go well together.
Just check out the "criticism", "it makes people think of nightclubs and dance floors". That's more of a problem with the fact the bisexuals chose those colours for their flags, not that film and TV scenes set in nightclubs and dance floors are lit like nightclubs and dance floors.
