This reminds me of an observation I read once on the difference between J.R.R. Tolkien and G.R.R. Martin. Tolkien experienced combat in the most horrific war in human history up until that point and created a work of beauty which has inspired countless others. Martin lived a comfortable life in the safest, most prosperous society in human history and created a work of ugliness and deliberate subversion. This comic seems to be a reflection of that dynamic.

I don't know how you'd confuse Hanselmann's work for Boydell's unless you have a really bad eye for art.

I couldn't bring myself to keep reading more than a few pages before moving ahead and looking for something else interesting to happen. The art is fucking bland and basic. The paneling is literally a copy-paste template for every fucking page. The dialogue is abysmal in a way that rivals Life Is Strange for most forced awkward young people talk. The story itself, contrary to the pretentious foreword, is fucking shit. Faggot becomes a bigger faggot and does some stupid stuff in between pages and pages and pages of melancholy whining.

This is a boring comic about unpleasant people, too obsessed with their own self-inflicted drama to realize what unpleasant sacks of shit they are. The reason these stories don't get told or widely talked about isn't because they make normal people uncomfortable, but because the ultimate takeaway once you get through it is that these kinds of people are just disgusting, awful creatures.

There's the most basic elements of a story. So it isn't being pedantic to analyze it. Even if you find it insipid, which I'd even argue is kind of the point, it is there. The story's there.

And I'm not saying it's "deep". I'm saying it rings true. It rings real. It rings disgusting, like those dark movies from the end of the 80s all about crushed hopes and despair.
