As once pointed out to me, Newgrounds has made no effort to enter competition with video sites like youtube, instead remaining as more like a small artsy place that allows people to start somewhere and grow into a proper animator, artist, game developer etc, build up a following and potentially get a funny meme out there.
It serves a purpose and a place where otherwise people would be buried in the deluge of content and algorithms choosing what content they want to display.

Flash was a perfectly fine format and it did what it supposed to do. It allowed creators to easily make cheap cartoons, and improve their skills, and had a relatively high skill ceiling which is why we see a bunch of amazingly animated cartoons come out of it today. So what happened?
Apple Faggots. See, sometime in the mid 2000s apple became hugely fucking popular and started pushing their proprietary bullshit. Apple didn't like flash, apple fags didn't like flash, because apple didn't support flash, Apple wanted to push HTML5 instead, they didn't care about the animators using it, they just wanted anything remotely resembling a competing product to go away. And so Apple fags memed their shit "Flash is just shitty to use!" and so "It looks like a flash cartoon" became an insult. And though Apple lost their desire to fuck over Flash after Steve Jobs died, the stigma was still instilled into people.
Newgrounds was entirely 100% fueled by Flash-made content. So after Apple fags ruined a perfectly fine animation tool, they ruined an amazing niche corner of the internet filled with nothing but the best it had to offer, Newgrounds was a product of it's time, a cornterstone of its generation, a glorious community that didn't give a fuck and just made shit to make people laugh and bring joy. I know that they began accepting non-flash files (ex. mp4 vids, Unity/Gamemaker/Haxe files), but it then depends on how much a slower community can push projects with emphasis. When a community is far gone from its past, you may as well consider 2018 Newgrounds to be a hobbled-down version of itch.io (which has way more flexibility in uploads, hence the rise in downloadable animations and webzines), especially when the slow activity doesn't combine well with community curation.
