Yesterday was April Fool's Day, so it's time to dump some stories featuring Batman's white-faced foe, THE JOKER.

Starting us off is "A CRIME A DAY!", written by Bill Finger with art by Bob Kane/ Jerry Robinson, published in Detective Comics #71, January 1943.

"A CRIME A DAY" flatly states two things about The Joker that define him as a character; 1. The Joker is a massive egotist, and 2. The Joker absolutely hates being made a fool of.

Also, Batman gives charity lectures on crime fighting. Supporting the community, and intimidating criminals by demonstrating how they can never defeat Batman.

Finger not only co-created Batman, but remains one of the best writers for the character, using his near limitless love of trivia to craft clever crimes and brilliant acts of detective work.

For example, Batman immediately recognizes that the Fire Department's Salvage Squad are fakes because real salvage men cover recovered items in tarps to protect them from further water damage.

When did Detective Comics merely become batman?

This is from the 40s I wonder is this the first time joker was known to have used toxic gas on his victims? He's notorious now for the Smilex gas used in the films and comics. I wonder if this is part of the inspiration?

Holy shit this is the inspiration for the 89 Batman Art gallery scene isn't it. Holy crap this is cool.

Well now that I think about it is a bit of a stretch. Still a Nicholson's joker is very much like the early joker from the golden age comics.

I need to buy some of the batman omnibus books I haven't read them since I was a kid.

Super cool keep posting Golden Age batman.

So many of these issues have little bits and bobs to what would amalgam into the modern day joker.

>When did Detective Comics merely become batman?

1986. Detective Comics was more or less "Batman's Book" since #35, but it was still an anthology comic. However, that changed in the 60's when Batman started taking over more and more of the book until 1986, when DC gave up the anthology/back-up stories in Detective all together, making it solely about Batman for 14 years. They tried to resurrect the back-up stories in the 2000's, but that kind of fell apart.

>This is from the 40s I wonder is this the first time joker was known to have used toxic gas on his victims?

Joker used a gas form of his patented Joker Venom in his first appearance, however it wasn't concentrated enough to actually kill anyone.

You know there's that thing "When criminals want to scare each other they tell Joker stories"? That's completely wrong. It should be "when criminals want a good laugh they tell Joker stories". All the punch-lines would be how Batman completely humiliated him.
