I'm thinking there might be stuff going on up-top to push for little variation. Maybe a mixture of 'branding' by having all these shows look so similar, and being easy to animate. They don't seem to hire people based on portfolios– First pic related is a storyboard artist that was on Regular Show and now does that fucking Apple and Onion or whatever show- Benton Connor. All his art looks exactly like this and it's clear they're not just doodles; he's just terribad at art.
Meanwhile the ones we constantly bitch about aren't necessarily bad, either. 2nd pic related is something that OK KO!'s creator, Ian Jones-Quarterly, known for being some weird black guy with the most unattractive face you've ever seen, has done. I can't remember who exactly did it, but 3rd pic related is also from someone who works on Gravity Falls. Neither of these two are the best art you've ever damn see, but it's certainly better than what they seem to produce.
Maybe it's a problem of not having the ability to animate? There's a lot of talk about the animation departments of art colleges being disturbingly inept, to the point where they don't know how to do basic shit. Maybe that's the problem.
