You can make a garbage comic interesting if you use really weird or disgusting themes and ideas or even make a really cheesy or generic comic and put in weird political/gory/edgy/random shit in there and make it interesting by making it a parody of sorts or even its own thing by developing the characters around said weird ideas.

It looks like Miller is getting better. Few years ago he had to be on a wheelchair, but I am sure there were fairly recent pictures of him walking again. He is also writing again, has bunch of projects in the works, his art improved, and he even somehow manged to make Romita Jr to put effort into art for Superman Year One.

Miller clearly bases character off of people currently living in these general areas, exaggerating their certain characteristics. Spartans and Macedonians look more like Greeks from the South. Miller clearly does not try to be even remotely accurate. Greeks fight in loincloths instead of armors, Persian royalty looks like bodymod enthusiasts and soldiers like monsters, in reality Ephialtes was killed by Greeks for his betrayal, and so on.
