From what I've gathered, after John K got shit-canned from Nickelodeon, he started filling the ranks of his studio with young people dreaming of a career in animation. He'd play like he'd be their mentor, get them into the industry, and they'd lap up every word he'd say. Then as soon as he got them at the desks, he'd start emotionally and psychologically abusing them. He'd shout down anyone who questioned him and guilt them into feeling bad because, after all, the great John K took a chance on them.
In my opinion, it seems that after Ren & Stimpy, John K used "making cartoons" as an excuse to vent his own issues by torturing young adults than as an art form. Which kinda makes sense, because nearly everything John K produced after R&S was shit.

If there's a theme at Marvel (or comic books generally) in the last twenty or thirty years it's basically that Jim Shooter was right.
He might have stepped on few toes and choked 'creative freedom' a bit but he had a clear vision for the company. He got the books out on time, he made sure that people got their fair share of royalties, he made sure that the books Marvel put out were, for the most part, well written and well illustrated (I can name five good comic books made by Marvel under Shooter. I can't name one good comic made by Marvel today) and he didn't want to kill off the steady earnings of the newsstand for the short term profits of going direct market only.
