>that show was surprisingly dark for 80s cartoons. if I remember correctly it was about a mad scientist who uses his invention, the Zone Generator, to spread this spiral shaped cloud over the earth that transforms anyone in the areas affected by the clouds into zombies or hyper intelligent mutants if your genetic code was just right.
No perfect but here's the basic backstory for SZ.
>In the far future of June 18, 2007, rouge scientist Overlord grabs a prototype high speed NASA shuttle
>Fly's around the world dropping Zone Pods
>These create "zones" that turn anyone in them into mindless "zoners" with no free will and obey the commands of Overlord
>Seeks to take over the world by having everyone under his control
>The zones also feed off human energy which is why Overlord doesn't kill anyone
>There's also Zone spores resulting in a Zone fungus, don't really know why that exists
>The countries of the world unite to fight a common enemy and a worldwide military effort (basically a lot of jet fighters from different countries) tries to take down this shuttle
>Some fighters are lost in the process but a lucky missile shot gets through the shuttle bombing hatch causing it to crash
>The attack is over but 50% of the world has now been lost to Overlord and his Spiral Zone
>The only substance that can resist the zone effect is a rare substance known as neutron-90
>Only enough to make 5 combat suits in the entire world
>Later they make two more only by using a laser to extract excess neutron-90 from the 5 existing ones
>That is why there is hardly anyone who can fight Overlord.
>Most of this info is revealed in Episode 53 (out of 65)
>Also happens to be another clip show episode infuriatingly enough when it starts out not looking like one
