In the German original they are referred to as "Zwerge" which means mythological dwarfs. Dwarfism is "Kleinwuchs" in German.

It could be that they are figments of her imagination, rather than real entities within the story. Do any of the other characters ever interact with the dwarves other than Snow White?

The animals swarm her and get the dwarfs to Snow White after Queen Grimhilde curses her with the Sleeping Death after warning them about her; the Queen mentions that they'll think Snow White's dead once she's cursed, waits till they're not home before giving Snow White the cursed apple, is chased by them, and tries to crush them with a giant boulder; and the Prince lifts each of them up right before the film ends.

They're very obviously mythological dwarves and not dwarfs.
