This year I finally did it. I scanned in Jack Kirby's autobiographical comic Street Code from my copy of Kirby: King of Comics by Mark Evanier.

In 1983, Jack Kirby was commissioned to make a comic about his childhood growing up in New York's Jewish Ghetto. Jack was given free reign to tell whatever story he wanted, and what he produce was Street Code.

OMAC LIVES SO THAT MAN MAY LIVE!

I'd storytime THE NEW GODS, but that would take weeks as to fully appreciate it you'd need to read Kirby's run on Superman's Pal Jimmy Olsen, The New Gods, Mister Miracle, and The Forever People.

Also, Kirby's prediction of a future ruled by the super-rich where the world is one spark away from annihilation is frighteningly accurate.

Jack Kirby dreamed up OMAC while working at Marvel. Kirby believe the world would need a new Captain America in the future, but that new Cap couldn't be Steve Rogers. We would need a Captain America that could handle the incredible problems we would face in the world that is coming.

Jack realized the idea was too revolutionary for Marvel to accept, and so he tucked it away in his mind. It was only when he went to work at DC did he unleash the ONE MAN ARMY CORPS.

The end of OMAC #1. Like most things Kirby created, OMAC is still too incredible for modern comic publishers to comprehend.

I love OMAC so much. On some level it reminds me of Totally Spies (which I also love), with their hypertechnology and international organisation for world peace.

It's a shame it only lasted eight issues, but they were good ones.

After DC shit-canned his New Gods titles, they told him to make a book about a demon. The Kirby family (and Mark Evanier) went to the Howard Johnson resturant, and between the time it took to order a hot turkey sandwich and it arriving at the table, Jack Kirby came up with the entire premise of The Demon and planned out the first couple issues.

He also named the book The Demon to mock DC's demands, and based Etrigan's appearance on a goose-skin demon mask worn in Harold R. Foster's Prince Valiant as an inside joke.

The Demon was one of those Kirby books that's fun and Kirby puts his all into making the comic, but his heart just isn't in it. It doesn't make it a bad by book by any stretch of the imagination, but it lacks the passion of THE NEW GODS.

Contrary to popular belief, Kirby didn't have The Demon rhyme. That was a latter addition, along with what I describe as "christianization" of the character. Kirby's Demon was more occult, Key of Solomon and Merlin's holy demons type stuff, while later writers just made Etrigan evil because he was a demon.
