Does anyone else get freaked out when animal characters gain human traits? It's even stranger when they show anthro animals living with humans like some Tom and Jerry shorts. At least TMNT acknowledges that the animals are mutants and as such abnormal. And then eventually you get freakier territory like Sly Cooper where anthro animals and feral animals exist in the same world.

 No.1018351

Every time there's anthro animals in a world with feral animals, it gets so complicated. Even if it's just anthros, you gotta wonder what they eat. Is murder legal if you eat the "person" you killed? Is it a dystopian society where you could be killed any second because a carnivore got hungry? It sounds horrible and it's never explored in fiction.

No, you just have autism.

But then your world makes no sense. You can't have a world of humanoid animals if the predators don't eat something. Even if you say they just eat fish, insects, or a synthetic meat. That's better than never explaining it.

Is it? Seems better to just never bring it up unless you intend to make a point about it, letting the audience fill in/not care about the details.

You might as well complain about the logistics, politics and economical viability in various fantasy settings, when the focus is on funny animal people doing funny animal people things.

Humans live in the same world as apes, those are just as close as feral is to anthro. I dont see the problem at all, but I suppose I can respect it. After all I can stand any anthro animal except chimp/monkey/ape types. I'd say its just the feet, but theres something else wrong ive never been able to pin down before.

I find something like Cars or even Toy Story way more austim-schisming than something like Zootopia. Talking animals have been a thing as long as people have been telling stories, so I can suspend my disbelief. However, when you get these "it's the real world, except secretly all these things are alive when no one is looking!" type of stories, or "it's a world made up entirely only of this one type of thing that shouldn't even be alive in the first place!" the worldbuilding raise more questions than my autism can handle.

Goofy's a dog, Pluto's a dog, one is just evolved to be intelligent and the other is Goofy.

If it's a serious story/tone, yeah you should explain things like that. If it's pure silly comedy then you can ignore those details.

Literally what?

That reminds me of an old web comic…Tiffany Tiger, I think, that actually dealt with this, in an offhand way. There was simply an area either outside the city or the like where predators were allowed to stalk and kill prey species. If I recall one of the supporting cast was a lion, ready to pounce on some herbivore, but didn't because they were talking about visiting his bar.

So, that's one way to tackle it

The whole ferals and anthros living together actually makes more sense to me than something like Zootopia. Because if all the animals are out there doing human shit instead of taking their place in the food chain, fertilizing the soil, aiding the spread of pollen, etc. then how is the environment even functioning?

I agree with this. I can watch Swat Kats, Star Fox, or Ninja Turtles, but when that Captain Simian cartoon showed up I felt weirded out. Especially because in the story of that show Captain Simian himself is the only advanced ape. The other support characters? They were feral and needed to have their brains evolved by sci-fi tech. And even weirder? The Token Female of the group before she became intelligent looked the way that she did as a Bipedal Humanoid who human men worshiped and sought her council to gain her favor into whatever cultural dealings were going on. All this and she was essentially a feral creature (and despite being feral she was dressed as if she was already intelligent and evolved). Man apes in general simply straight up weird me out. I can see why the crew that made Zootopia went out of their way to ensure that not even one small monkey showed up in the film.

The only apes I can stomach are the Nintendo Donkey Kong ones.

It could be that Zootopia has a complex system of large bugs that fill roles similar to animals, or that there are "unevolved" counterparts to everything out in the wild, similar to humans and apes.
