Few conventions are actually that bad. The people who get dragged into the shitpit for looking at ladies the wrong way are usually infamous repeat offenders and people who are deeply rooted into "the cosplay community"

You've got that part right, though. And it's the reason why you probably don't want to go to fan conventions. Being a "fan" of things has changed. Tumblr made fandom into a cult-like phenomenon and it's really poisoned the way cons operate these days. So if you go to a con, most panels will be shit. Most events won't be worth going to. Most of the attendees will be shitty hipsters, attention whores, and spastic younger kids who have never heard of 99% of the shows you love.

So if you go, you'll be paying out the ass for a badge so you can wander the dealer's hall trying to find stuff that you could have just bought online at a better price, uncomfortably surrounded by people you detest. I used to love cons, but they're not the same now that I'm older and more jaded.

Yeah, the intensity was probably always there. I mean there were people that learned how to speak Klingon or Tolkiens Elf language just because they really liked the thing. Something happened shortly after the internet came around that just, really unbalanced the whole thing. And really? I don't think we'll ever be able to track it down to a single source without a doubt.

Think about it. A massive new technological surge happened at just the same time geek culture found widespread financial success, just around the same time the post-modernists and identitarians began a major push to enter and destroy everything by injecting politics and weird social pressure into everything. And on top of everything, writing and popular culture have devolved into screaming memes as hard and annoyingly as possible.

It's this weird vortex of suck that has kinda obliterated most fandoms. And, yeah, Bronies are among the least horrible groups out there. Something I'm 100% sure comes from the fact that 'culture critics' can't just claim they are 'problematic' for liking a show about rainbow colored horses for girls.

That's shit that happens at big cons. At smaller cons there's less of a risk since it doesn't bring in the attention whores looking for that sort of thing. As long as you aren't ogling it should be fine. If it's that big of a problem for you, you can always do what I do and ask them for a picture. Cosplay bitches love taking pictures.

I actually enjoy going to smaller cons. It's a friendlier environment and you get more of a one-on-one with the guests. It's how I learned that Marvel kept a guy employed while he was in prison for murder and how the old pros used to extend deadlines by mailing the publisher everything except the middle page.

Cons used to be where you could get some actual fucking rare collector items back in the day. Nowadays there are so much websites out there that you can get that same super rare item (for much less on top of it)
