I was going to reply, it depends on the writer. In the hands of Todd MacFarlane or Chris-Chan or Charles Crumb it looks like shit and interrupts the story, but in the hands of a competent writer, like Matt Wagner, Alan Moore, Steve Gerber or Neil Gaiman, it is the story, it complements the visuals and only steps in when prose is necessary…
If the author never narrates, you should ask yourself what kind of story you're writing, or reading.
