Well, the writers of Heroes Unlimited seemed to have a real problem with OP characters, the rule book kept snarking at them like powerful characters preclude role-playing or writing.

Marvel took a different tack and tried to keep the gameplay within what we saw in the pages of the books, which meant even guys like Daredevil and Captain America stood a puncher's chance against monsters like Hulk and Thor. Also had a good way of handling arguments over bullshit like Superman always pulls out of his ass, it was treated as a "power feat", with difficulty set by how many times you could remember them actually doing it in the comics, like the Human Torch using his powers to suck the heat OUT of things, or Namor shooting lightning bolts or puffing himself up, or Hulk flexing so hard he flips in mid-air out of the way of a railroad trestle.

There was a really good map of Marvel New York City, with all the points of interest, like Avengers Mansion and Four Freedoms Plaza.

And an interesting module for Days Of Future Past, where you used maps of your own home town to play the resistance against the Sentinels 20 years in the future.

Never played anything official from Marvel or DC, but I have played a handful of capeshit games. Sentinels of the Multiverse is a generic/original supers card game where each hero has their own deck along with a deck for the villain and the environment. Highly replayable and it has a ton of expansions, which makes it a little pricey, but it's a game that could hit the table every week and feel different every time, which is neat.

I remember the City of Heroes cardgame. I liked the idea that their plan was you could actually load an image onto a card for your hero and it would still be tourney legal. Unfortunately after playing it a few times I remembered why ccg's suck ass, as my attempt at having FUN in a game with a theme had its face smashed in by decks designed purely around exploitable mechanics.

Though I loved City of Heroes enough, I'd love for there to be a Tabletop RPG if it weren't being held hostage by the koreans. Otherwise I've never found a group to run anything but Fantasy aside from one time we managed to run Star Wars.

I've played in one Supers game, using the Palladium system. It was a fucking mess. And I was running a supers campaign, but scheduling and flaky players has put that on hold for the past few months, which sucks.

I have played the CoH card game once before and it seemed kind of neat, but it was pretty obvious that it was deeply flawed in design. Needing specific cards to match specific powersets and archetypes meant that boosters were always going to be shit and building decks was going to be wonky as fuck, and that's not even accounting for balance or whether or not certain types and powers are playable on their own. Sucks that it died with everything else CoH, but I don't think anyone is dying to get the CCG back as badly as they want the private servers that are supposedly happening to be a real thing.

If only Champions Online and DC didn't suck donkey balls. Christ, I'm a bit of a furfag and even that doesn't save Champions. What was it about CoH that just felt so good?

Not much. I know it goes right back to the 70's, and it has a unique premise in that you play yourself, as if you'd had an origin.

An online friend wanted to run a campaign, but I had to bow out because I have a few stalkers, so I try to keep my personal information private.

So, If got this straight, there were four Marvel tabletops.

Marvel Super Heroes: The Heroic Role-Playing Game (1984) and the advanced version(1985). The classic they based the retro FASERIP system on. (TSR)

Marvel Super Heroes Adventure Game (1998-2000).

Used the SAGA system. (TSR)

Marvel Universe Roleplaying Game (2003) published by Marvel themselves. Some kind of diceless system involving resource management. Didn't last very long.

Marvel Heroic Roleplaying (2012) Margaret Weis Productions.

Used the Cortex Plus system. Weiss didn't bother renewing the license in 2013.

So there isn't an official Marvel tabletop now? That seems pretty typical of the assclowns running the joint. They must hate money.

It is and they have, and there's not much to say beyond that.

GURPS - game does not scale well to high power levels. Roll under systems will always have this problem. A perfect example is the way they offer alternate rules for super dodge/parry/block, that make high levels worse that the lower scores in the non-super version of the game.

Savage Worlds (Necessary Evil) - Game does not scale well to superhuman levels. The game functions on a forced short power range. The difference between the lowest level d4 and the highest d12 is not very much. The most powerful thing in skill rolls are straight plusses, but those are exactly how they model super skills. This produces a situation where every character must take super skills to participate on a basic level in combat.

Hero/Champions - the first one that works. It doesn't explicitly claim to be a miniatures game, and the large scale of some of the abilities makes it difficult, but it is rare for a supers game to leave so much of combat not abstracted. Positioning and line of sight matter greatly, which is fine for a sim superhero game, but doesn't resemble comic fights in form or in feeling.

Marvel Stone spending game whose name I cannot remember - one of the worst designed games I have ever seen. The sample combat shown in the book couldn't even get the rules right. It is a bad sign when you can contrive a situation to show off your rules working and still fail. The main problem is the idea behind the game is a rock/paper/scissors type of deal between movement, and range, and attack, and mitigation. But they failed To make the scissors work. The are degenerate strategies that make certain character just win against opponents where there should be a more even contest, because once you have an optimal strategy, there's no reason to vary.

TMNT and other strangeness/Heroes Unlimited/Ninjas and SuperSpies/et al - It's Palladium, what do you think it's like.

FASERIP - solid game with no effort placed into balance. For such a traditionally structued game, it does not play will with min-maxers.

You'd have to get details off the GM, but the previous games have all been loosely D20 rules, play-by-post, originally sprung from the old Spinnerette forums which were shut down years ago.

Knowledge of the system isn't a prerequisite, just that your character have some kind of power, be young enough, and for this game, be dangerous enough, to end up in a max-security reform school for supers.

And, you know, observe basic RPG etiquette, so no no-selling the GM, and try to keep OOC conflict under control.

You'd think I wouldn't have to add that last bit, but we had one player literally try to take on the GM with her character. I have never seen that in 30 years of gaming. It was quite amazing.
