I tune all the way down to de-stress the neck, take side cutters and clip the strings, then re-string it normally (this part takes time but it's the one people are usually unsure or scared about, but literally you just thread it through the bridge and pegs, bend the part that sticks out, and start tuning up. If you get about three coils around the peg you're fine, you get a feeling for how floppy the string should be before you start tuning.
Don't tune all the way, repeat for every string, then tune to the desired tuning, do some shredding and bending, wait an hour, re-tune, shred again, wait another hour, re-tune if necessary.
Once it stops dropping out of tune you can fine-tune if you have floyd rose and voila

They're a lot of fun. Lout jets flying nearby and sometimes a show. Last time they had Tora Tora Tora! which was a re-enactment on the raid on Pearl Harbor. Lots of pyrotechnics and smoke.
