Well, I went to work and got an e-mail on my lunch break. I got into Grad School for the fall semester, so that's... I guess good. I got home and decided to totally clean the house to surprise my wife and emptied some old stuff out of the fridge. What I thought was expired sour cream turned out to be her special French Onion dip, so she was pretty upset about that. Now I have to drive to a deli half way across town tomorrow after work to replace it before she does. She was cool about it, though, so we went to dinner and had a good time. You and I have very different definitions of fun.
If you really want to get started learning to play but don't want to get a POS keyboard, cause there's definitely a noticeable difference between cheap and quality, you should (If you don't already have one) pirate a copy of FL studio and assign the Piano roll to your keyboard. You can set an Octave from W to O and use Q and P to shift up and down. You can put Sharp and Flat notes on the adjacent number keys. It's not ideal, but speaking from experience, it works.

I was explaining to my brother the basic music theory shit to play and it occured to me that you can't learn alot of it wqithout know ing alot of other music theory shit
I had to explain to him the idea of musical keys, chords, scales, intervals, the circle of fifths to learn about accidentals in keys, major and minor triads and 7ths and that was just to start off jeez
I've been playing instruments for like 7 years and I've only been able to as a self taught get to a basic understanding of music theory
I am excited to see what he can do in that time if he continues to pursue it starting out with taht knowledge from the b eginning
also I feel like it will be alot easier to put into play musical iudeas on a piano than a guitar once i can get the 12 majors muscle memoried on piano like i have on gutiar

Ugh.. That was by and far my least favorite elective course I attended in college. I love music, I love the idea of music, I love the notions of how music works and why, but when it came down to studying it, I lost all interest.
I'm also self taught, and you're probably right, your brother is going to pick up nominally quicker than I'm sure either of us did if he goes into it with this knowledge preemptively. I played bass a lot in high school. I was in a "Band," but it wasn't until I moved into my first apartment that I decided I wanted to genuinely learn to play music, so I bought an old electric piano from a friend of mine and taught myself everything I know (Which is admittedly, not a lot. I can play songs if I seriously take the time to practice them, but writing music is not a strong suit of mine.)
from what I've found, the piano is the easiest instrument to produce the clear, concise sounds you want because unlike woodwind or brass, where you rely on your breathing, or guitar/bass where you rely on the pressure your fingers are putting on the strings, piano is pretty much the instrument doing all the work, minus some foot pedaling.

I've made a lot of friends over the years. I met Chad when we were both homeless. I was sleeping in a park and he straight up walked up to me, lightly kicked me in the ribs, asked me if he could squat with me and started playing guitar. He and I sung Johnny Cash songs and drank Mickeys all night.

Have you ever tried playing in sync with music? Like, listening to Simon & Garfunkle and only playing one of their parts?
You could probably find a mixing software, load up your favorite songs, mix out the guitar parts and then play over the rest. That would probably help you learn how to play in sync with other musicians. Otherwise, you live like right near Iowa City and Dubuque, there's gotta be a community center or youth hostel somewhere where you can find another dude with a guitar and try to play with them.
