If hes guilty of anything it's being consumed by self doubt, which is justified considering the events leading up to that one, and he ultimately casts it off in the 4th episode anyway.

There was no reason for Hiro to not remember piloting Strelizia. It's not a recurring problem nor was it ever justified.

There was no reason for command not to let him pilot Strelizia again. They know he's immortal, he successfully piloted it before, and he's otherwise disposable.

Hiro's ability to copilot with Ichigo has no bearing on his ability to copilot with 002, but they try it and treat the result like it matters.

Mitsuru getting injured doesn't matter because he's all healed up by episode 5.

002 inviting Hiro to run away and them disobeying orders at the end of ep. 4 don't matter because they're back to toeing the line at the start of ep. 5.

Hiro's emotional arc is based on nothing, is resolved through the power of boners, and comes full circle to his state at the end of ep. 1.

The only things that matter are that Hiro is definitely incompatible with Ichigo, and that Mitsuru has an inferiority complex. These could have been established with dialogue or flashbacks. All the melodrama and cuckery of eps. 2 and 3 were a waste of time.

Also the end of episode 4 DID need build up. I think if I cut anything, it'd be the Mitsuru part, but at the same time, it was interesting to see some development for the other cast members that aren't 02 and Hiro. But if I absolutely needed to cut something it'd be the Mitsuru bullshit. Maybe have it so he gets BTFO'd instantly on entering the mecha, they try to cart 02 off again at gun point, and then you get the scene of episode 4.

Episode's 1 and 2 were great. Having Hiro not remember if he piloted was good I think, because you're still having a nobody trainee suddenly able to pilot with the top tier pistil that kills all the stamen. Adding a little bit of mystery into what happened, and also making MC doubt himself a bit, is important so that glorious payoff in 4 feels all the better.

I dunno, pacing wasn't terrible, but I just felt that payoff came a bit late. It was frustrating. Now Hiro's far more engaging, so at least it was worth it.

The problem is Hiro was already willing to die piloting Strelizia by the end of ep. 1. His arc from hopeless to resolved was complete. Ep. 4 was only cathartic because eps. 2 and 3 were pointless clusterfucks.

To have an arc where Hiro finds his resolve, 002 should force him into Strelizia at the end of ep. 1 instead of it being his choice. Then jump to ep. 5 and show Hiro being conflicted over his desire to pilot FranXX and how copiloting with 002 is slowly killing him. Show some cute character interactions between Hiro and 002. Add a battle to show Strelizia isolating squad 26 and saving a green squad 13. For his third time piloting Strelizia, let Hiro fight his condition or orders from command to chase 002 and declare that he wants to copilot with her specifically and nothing can stop him.

If we need scenes with Hiro and Ichigo or Mitsuru and 002 copiloting, put them after the second battle when command has a good reason to try other pairings.

Their personalities usually run roughly along the following lines:

The Red Oni is associated with passion, wildness, and defiance. A Red Oni character is often more brawny than brainy, extroverted, enthusiastic, determined, and filled with a zest for life. They are also much more likely to break conventions and rules than their counterpart. Often an Idiot Hero or, in more mature pieces, a Boisterous Bruiser. The relationship can also vary wildly, as they are just as likely to be close friends as they are to be bitter rivals or enemies. One thing that is sure is that regardless of how big a cast is, when these two are in it, they will be magnetically drawn to each other.

Note that many times, this will be a relative, not an absolute, distinction: the Red Oni need not be The Fool and the Blue Oni need not be a Straw Vulcan.

The name comes from traditional Japanese folklore where Oni (think troll/ogre) usually came in two flavors, a Red and a Blue. Over time, it's gotten popular to ascribe different qualities and personalities to the two colors. (Think the high-strung Type A personality and the easy-going Type B personality.) In a show where it's relevant, differences in fighting style may be something like Technician vs. Performer. For example, a red may rush headlong into combat without focus or a plan, relying on surprise or intimidation. It may be that their strategy is to close the fight quickly before their opponent can think or adapt. It's also possible that they're going to tank their opponent's defenses in order to focus on beating them down. The blue may use cunning traps, stealth and strategies, or tend to win in elegant Single-Stroke Battle fashion, or rely on hitting a target with magical powers or projectiles from a distance instead of running up to their opponent and punching them in the face. Force and Finesse is a variation where red tends to rely on raw power while blue uses precision strikes. Analysis page has more examples of possible red-blue dynamics.

Add one person that bridges the Red Oni and Blue Oni and you got Freudian Trio, with the Red Oni becomes the Id, the Blue Oni becomes Superego, and the connecting person becomes the Ego. That's the basic formula, but not always. Sometimes as the plot progresses, someone new is added and as they become the trio, this newcomer might be even more emotional than the Red Oni or is even more calm and calculating than the Blue Oni. And whoever keeps the trio together is the ego.

Keep in mind that this trope can apply to anyone and to any pairs of people. They do not have to literally wear red and blue for this trope to work and sometimes, they can even wear opposite colors that contrast their roles as a red or blue Oni. They also do not have to be of the same gender either as this trope can also apply to two people consisting of a boy and a girl.

Hiro's big damn hero moment and the confirmation of his/002's theme was really poorly done. It wasn't impressive, it wasn't cool, the driving force behind his resurrection wasn't very dramatic (002 randomly going apeshit), and overall it was just really lame. The buildup wasn't there for the payoff. Also the blue-std being cured through the power of thirst was like wowman.

The dinosaur had been pounding on them for 9999999 years by the point Hiro was cognizant enough to realize she was flipping out. Coupled with the small intermission of the mindspace revelations and ramblings he went on, his personal growth and resolve to save her based on the lame one-winged bird metaphor (and thirst) kind of lacked in dramatic tension.

As a defining moment of affirming Hiro's role in the story and cementing the themes, the scene just wasn't cool the way it fundamentally needed to be. I did not at all really get the sense that this specific instance was character defining and game-changing. Rather, it just felt like another extension of the same philosophical allegories and bullshit we've been getting since the beginning, and that just doesn't work in context.

In episode 4, and a lot of people pointed this out, he didn't specifically state he cared about 02 in a meaningful way beyond just seeing her as a human and comrade.

The big thing about episode 4 is that he got over whatever fear there was in him because of the supposed rumors about her being a monster, and begged to ride with her. But the monologue at the end showed clearly he was prepared to die in the line of duty, and didn't fear death or 02.

Episode 4 paid off nothing. Hiro's hesitation was unjustified. Push the latter half of episode 4 to episode 6 and Hiro's hesitation can be based on how he is actively suffering from riding with 02 in episode 5.

Everything up until the blowoff of episode 4 was about Hiro, not necessarily his relationship with 02. It was about his misery failing to do the one thing he was raised to do and gave meaning to his life, and how 02 allowed him to do that thing even if it killed him.

Episodes 5 and then the blow off at 6 were about him realizing that a relationship, or in this case "piloting", isn't just about him. He leans on 02, she leans on him. That's why both the second and the third ride required a proper blow off and you can't meld the two into one. I mean, you could, but it wouldn't have been nearly as effective.

While I agree the Mitsuru drama added far too much run time between the 1st and 2nd rides, it still gives a build up to his dialogue towards 02 towards the end of episode 4. I just think that build up was fine with just episode 2. Heck, combine episodes 2 and 3, have episode 4 be episode 3, and you'd probably be set. That said, the overall pacing between 1 and 6 wasn't bad, so then you'd have an issue on how to blow off the what was clearly planned as the first cour's first arc.

Except he didn't remember he did anything in episode 1. He started believing he did once he managed to sorta pilot in episode 2, but he didn't remember anything after the kiss.

Ride 1 was declaration of his initial goal of piloting for the sake of the society, as he was raised. But it also included a subtle indication he had grown to care about 02 specifically, because he saw her going out there alone as something wrong.

Ride 2 was an affirmation he did not fear 02 (which is important more on 02's end), and regardless of what happened to him he was willing to ride with her and die for his desire to follow the path that was given to him by his superiors.

Ride 3 was when what was foreshadowed at ride 1 comes to a head and he realizes that he show ride not for himself or for the ideals he was supposedly raised for, but ride for 02.

These are 3 distinct things and they were each handled fine. The only thing I agree was perhaps not as well done was the in between of rides 1 and 2.

Hiro was the opposite and started over producing them because he was effectively fighting whatever condition or disease 02 causes in her copilots.

And if you do that, you lose that sweet third time's the charm symbolism (which honestly is probably just a "third date" gag more than anything), and more importantly it fucks up pacing EVEN MORE because then you'd have god knows how many episodes until we get the fucking main character into a robot in the first place.

I'm digging all the character progression so far. The whole thing even makes me like 02 crazyness to an extent.

First 5 episodes where centered about Hiro's need to drive a Franxx, and how pairing with someone even as dangerous as 02 gave him what he wanted.

Then on chater 6 the focus changes to how Hiro was actually also helping 02, and how she needed him as much as he needed her. Makes me wonder if the whole "parter killer" thing wasn't all 02's fault, but maybe they happened because no other partner actually wanted to be there for her. It's a nice analogy on relationships, how they can't be one sided. Ironic also, considering the one who dies is the one who doesn't devote himself to it.
