With Halloween coming up, let’s get a horror/psychological thread going. Finished watching Corpse Party, Another, and currently watching Ghost Hunt and Shiki.

What are your favs?

 No.65229

Kemonozume, Shiki, and Hellsing Ultimate (not regular Hellsing) are amazing.

Shiki is really creepy so far

 No.65237

haven't seen a "horror" anime that I would consider truly scary, but I really liked the monster designs in Kagewani

 No.65240

>>65233

It's a ride with a hugely satisfying end.

 No.65323

>>65229

What’s the difference between Hellsing Ultimate and Hellsing regular?

 No.65326

>>65323

Hellsing Ultimate follows the manga all the way through and does a better job of telling the story with OVA level production values. Hellsing starts with the manga beginning but deviates quickly and turns into a so-so anime. Ultimate is one of my favorite anime so give it a try.

 No.65332

>>65326

So Hellsing Ultimate is pretty much a do-over from a colossal fuck up?

 No.65335

>>65332

A much better do-over.

 No.65343

personally, besides the 80s/90s supergore edgy ones, i feel Horror doesn't translate well to anime.

 No.65345

Lain is pretty spooky

What is your favourite Junji Ito manga? I'm trying to sell my friends on the man, having sampled his works slowly over the years.

My three favourites so far are The Bully, Army of One and The Enigma of Amigara Fault. But if I had to point to any one great story of his, which should it be?

 No.65349

>>65343

Maybe I’m just a big pussy, but there were some moments when I got spooked by Another and Gakkou Gurashi, like when Miki asked Yuki about Megu-nee

 No.65350

>>65347

Haven’t read the mangos but I’m think of checking out the anime

 No.65361

Best horror anime will always be Shiki for me. Any other horror/psych anime as satisfying as this?

Yami Shibai has some spooky episodes, but generally I think manga does a better job. I'd recommend Fuan no Tane.

 No.65367

I remember reading 6000 some years back; was pretty creepy by my memory of it, but I honestly don't recall if it was actually good at this point. Maybe I ought to reread it again, especially now that the entire thing's been out and scanlated for a while.

>>65229

Hellsing Ultimate struck me less as a horror series, at least for the viewer, and more of a case of it for those having to face Alucard, which usually comes down to more him letting them try killing him, and then him returning the favor in spectacular fashion. Still a good series though, and one that manages to run with its edge so hard that it loops around into being mildly humorous even when it's not outright trying to be.

 No.65374

Mononoke had some spooky arcs

Mahou Tsukai no Yome: Hoshi Matsu Hito (just the 3-episode OVA) was pretty tense too

first arc of Shingeki no Kyojin

Claymore

that one episode of Flip Flappers

a few episodes of Gakkou Gurashi

plenty of episodes in Mushishi

 No.65375

>>65374

What episode in flip flappers I forgot.

 No.65377

>>65375

episode 5

 No.65391

>>65343

This although i felt higurashi was kinda spooky when i first watched it. Keep in mind i was like 13 and it's more of psychologic horror anyway.

>>65350

If you're gonna consume Junji Ito works definitely go for the manga over the anime.

>>65365

Fuan no Tane has some genuinely creepy designs but i might just be saying that because i read it at 4am while being very tired.

 No.65393

>>65350

for the most part, the anime is a subpar adaption and at best it's decent.

The opening song is quite catchy though.

 No.65412

>>65367

It's definitely some action but the supernatural aspect of it make it a horror series. The way the vampires invade London for example reminds me of the movie Lifeforce which is great 80s horror.

Yeah, I suppose during the time that Alucard's waterlogged, the Last Battalion gets to have their baby devouring way with London, and the ensuing threeway with only a handful of people giving a shit about what actually becomes of the citizens counts enough, since it's effectively removing the one thing that could clean everything up fast for a number of episodes.

 No.65464

>>65456

It's so great. Really shows how much of monsters the bad guys were. But you're right. It's definitely a lot of seinen action with a dark tone both colorwise and figuratively with the exception of the random comedy which people tend to hate so it's lacks the psychological edge.

 No.65722

>WWII zeppelins manage to bomb the capital

>goverment cant do shit

>organization that fight monster cant do shit

>vatican sends troops

>finally someone is going to…

>they start killing all the citizens

that shit was weird.

Thinking of rewatching Boogiepop Phantom before Others releases. It's super underrated for how well it pulls off a constant depressing scary atmosphere with an interesting non-linear story, with every episode having connections to multiple others. That includes whatever is most frightening about each characters story, it's a living city with multiple terrible things happening around each other.

Someone should shoop that comic about that guy being taken hostage, only for the "help" to run up and shoot said hostage the head, and replace the faces with the Major, a generic brit, and Maxwell.

Hellsing is fucking stupid trash. Not even remotely scary because the protagonist is a shitty gary stu.

 No.65929

>>65928

but the real protagonist is Seras. Alucard is just the posterboy

Between Hellsing and Hellsing Ultimate I'll take the latter because it runs closer to the latter and I've seen multiple anons say it's a better story for that. But christ do I hate the pervasive 3DCG and this particular style of rendering blood and gore.

 No.66235

The original Hellsing TV series is actually pretty decent if you stop watching after the end of the Valentine Brothers part.
