If you only read the web novel, prepare. The anime and manga is based off the published LN version, which tends to differ from the Web Novel version.

Shield Hero couldn't save the world from the brink of destruction. The mystical forces that helped brought him into this world thanked him for his hard work anyway, so they sent him back to his own world with the tanuki girl before the world was destroyed. It pissed off people so much that he decided to write how the tanuki and sheild hero went back to try and save it again.
