Very few manga have come close to BLAME!'s atmosphere and background and monster designs. The whole concept of the city never ending, with tech so advanced that it seems god like was what drew me into this.

I fucking loved it, even though I normally don't really like manga. The worldbuilding is fantastic and I really like the concept of a giant city inhabited by all these different tribes, tribes, dystopian state-like companies and technology that most of the city's population no longer understands. I did kind of lose track of what the hell was happening anymore during the latter stages of the story though.

It's truly sad that this never got an anime adaption aside from some Netflix CG-fest. Kind of strange seeing it as it ran from 1998 to 2003 and the late 90s/early 2000s were a pretty popular era for cyberpunk anime. At the very least, I would have liked it to get a videogame adaption, that might have worked well.

It was Nihei's magnum opus and masterpiece.

Too bad he became a sellout and starts chugging moe-blob harem bullshit nowadays.

I really enjoy the minimalist storytelling, no-talking-while-fighting, ridiculously giant explosions, and the dark grungy artstyle. All of these are completely absent in his newer works, as well as the Netflix's crappy adaptation.

There are expositions everywhere, plenty of talking while fighting, and everything looks clean and polished, despite being supposedly post-apocalyptic. Nihei's fall from grace should be added to the Top 10 anime betrayals.

I've always wondered if Bio Omega was a prequel to BLAME!

 No.45016

From what I understand, only NOiSE, NSE, Blame!, Blame! NSE and Blame!² are set in the same universe.

It does get confusing, since he really likes to use the same terminologies in all of his different works.

 No.45020

>>45016

Then again if you see the insanity in Bio Omega it actually might all be happening in the same place all at the same time, cause I believe it implies that the city has broken all concepts of reality so who fucking knows.

It wasn't bad, to be honest.

They worked with the little plot they could fit in a movie, and the art was decent.

 No.45031

>It wasn't bad, to be honest.

>They worked with the little plot they could fit in a movie

They could choose any part of the manga to adapt, and they chose to bastardize and hybridize the fishermen arc with the bio-electric company arc.

Why they didn't choose Domochevsky's arc is beyond me.

>the art was decent.

The clean and polished 3DCG art is completely different from the dirty, dark and grungy hand-drawn pen-and-ink artwork.

The major shift in art style made the atmosphere in the movie completely different than the manga.

 No.45032

>>45030

You could say the fact that it was decent (if it can be called that) was the biggest problem with it. Something the likes of Blame! does not deserve a decent adaption, it deserves a fucking masterful adaption akin to the first Ghost in the Shell film or Akira.

But of course, even though they knew they could never make more than what seems like a demo of what a good Blame film could be, they still made one because (((Netflix))) needs to make cash.

Blame! is something that would require a team of veteran animators and background artist along with an AKIRA sized budget, god I made myself sad realising that will never happen.

The fact they fucked up on one of BLAME!'s key defining traits is what riled my almonds.

On the plus side, all the Blame! material is in that weird place where it is highly influential, and talked about, yet not popular enough to get a bad live action movie made.

>Why they didn't choose Domochevsky's arc is beyond me.

Because it comes too late in the story.

I still think the fishermen arc was the best fit for a standalone movie, it's one of the few arcs (if not the only arc that early in the plot) that features more dialogue and secondary characters. Hard (not impossible, granted) to make a feature film with only the main cast and not a single other character to talk to. In one go they managed to introduce the main 3 characters and open and close a small arc while leaving the overarching plot hanging. It's animu Mad Max.

They could have done 2D high quality shorts, where not a full on movie would still be of high quality while retaining the soul and Atmosphere of the manga.
