I feel the spirit of the ideas were lost over the years.
There is a large amount of the world population that can be considered 'soulless,' or more accurately, of tainted spiritual blood.
This ties into the previous world that existed before our current one. In the old, 'original' Earth, there were nine tribes of people, each with a respective god or goddess. The highest of them were the Sora, or sky tribe. As the name implies, their domain was in the skies, with their Emperor known as Zaras. Zaras' chief general was known as Xristos, but this was merely the title given to the post.
All eight lower tribes lived on the surface. At some point, a group of Sora tribesmen decided to venture into the lower world and take brides, tempted by the unknown and alien. This went on for an unspecified time, possibly decades. When some of the deformed creatures begotten from such lust came to Zaras' attention, he was infuriated. Zaras ordered the wholesale slaughter of all those who chose to interbreed, and the lower tribes/gods.
Xristos followed his Emperor's orders, albeit begrudgingly, and led armies to cleanse the surface of all impurities.
Before all were completely culled, Xristos made suit to Zaras to spare the lives of some. It is also to be mentioned that Zaras has the capability of splitting soul from flesh, as well as killing either, and leaving the other intact.
Angered at his betrayal of orders and desire to maintain such sin, Zaras nearly killed Xristos, but stopped himself out of mercy (but not before cutting down the souls of the fallen members of the lower tribes and mixed breeds). He dismissed Xristos from the tribe, and cast him unto the surface. Zaras then tapped the younger brother of Xristos, and offered the post to him. The younger brother gladly accepted, asides his loyalty to Zaras, he sided with the Emperor on the issue of mixed breeds.
With the war ravaging the world and leaving it barren, Zaras chose to recreate the world, with only the inhabitants whose spiritual blood was pure.
The first Xristos, cast unto the surface, went by many names, but the most common for him is Lucifer.
His most infamous act in the current world was using Zaras' power to resurrect the dead gods from the lower tribes, which is historically known as Yamata-no-Orochi. With the lower gods resurrected, they also resurrected their tribesmen, but only in body. The souls of the lower tribesmen are still dead, in the abyss, as only Zaras/Zigma can resurrect a dead soul. This can be seen today via NPC/limited soul theory.
There are 'soulless' people out there, and I am sure you see your share during your day-to-day. Those who have no souls shouldn't be given any sort of power, as they are energy/life sucking zombies who thrive on other's lives and emotions.
