My family has disowned me all but in formality for a variety of reasons, anime hardly being an important one. As for concealing, the Kindle application makes concealing manga and light novels easy. The shows I only watch when nobody else is in the house (I sadly still live with my dumbass parents) or if the parents are asleep. I have the Funimation application on my Xbox One and my dad does not seem to know what it is even though the icon is blatantly on the operating system.

Part time JP-EN translator here. The salary in translating entertainment products is usually very low and unfair considering the amount of effort required e.g. translating nuances, implicit messages and ultimately emotions, etc.
Translating documents for people that are into academics is several times more profitable (since people in universities have lots of money, be it their own or the government's and they are willing to waste it away for the sake of gaining credibility) and is actually easier (you only need to learn few simplified concepts within the fields of your clients' expertise, if there's any.).
Some translators live in poor conditions, barely getting by, and they can rarely raise their salaries unless they have good reputation. Being affiliated with organisations with lots of money and political agendas may help them surviving.
With all these factors in mind, it's not weird to find some translators become greedy.
