This technically counts as otaku culture, doesn't it? Might be fun to learn together about things like Shintoism/whatever japanese deities are worthy of worship and what hentai there is of them, while attempting to arrange for autistic but respectful visits to haunted japanese locations and/or possessed dolls/artifacts/etc. for the sake of communication with monster girls or at least funposting about the visit afterwards.

Mononoke is one of the most beautiful occult anime I've ever saw. Hoozuki no Reitsu is actually a fun watch and I enjoyed the manga. There's also a manga called about the Slit Mouthed Woman, a yokai from Japanese myth.

Shibito no Koe is a tale of an occult club kid with a ghost waifu in an urban legend of the week format. The author clearly is inspired by Junji Ito in her storytelling, with nothing being explained as usual. The Yokai Hunter series on the other hand explores Japanese folk tales and myths which all turn out to be real stories about elder gods etc in a very Lovecraftian way.

Plenty of cultures across the world have them, so with there even being tattered futon yokai I figured Japan would have to have some examples here and there. Though compared to the west, I'm not sure if they'd have them on display someplace as an attraction.

The biggest concern is that the spirit was actually able to burn through so much salt. Salt tends to ward off evil spirits by burning up their evil through it or something similar, but isn't a full guarantee that they'll stay away. If an urban rumor yokai is powerful enough to burn through all that salt, that has some pretty heavy implications to it.
