The filter being static on the screen is what hurts this the most for me. It's like we're watching something through camera with dirty lenses. Apply a filter over the background and make it move with it, to make it look like it was drawn on old paper. Then add another filter over characters, and also make it move with them

She's actually a very well-written female, realistically speaking. She tries to appear noble, important, and powerful, but she does not possess any of the moral values or character that the men do. She is a slave to her emotions; she is attracted to the strongest and most cunning fighter (the MC) even though she deemed him an unworthy lower class exile. She is cowardly and manipulative. She is all-around very child-like mentally, and they didn't even design her to look very young and innocent. Her behavior makes no logical sense because she doesn't think logically, it's all emotions. I think everyone prefers anime girls idealized though, so nobody will probably consider her waifu material no matter how pure she is. Probably a good thing, just in case she ends up getting raped by Mongols.

I thought the first episode was shit, maybe for someone else it will be different. Hell, maybe I myself will like the first episode when I rewatch it seeing as my main issue with it was that it felt like the writers expected you to know the characters already and they were only given proper introductions later on.

Haruhi had a pretty shitty first episode, at least when it was originally aired. Lucky Star was shit for the first four episodes. Cowboy Bebop's first episode was kind of mediocre, not bad but not really the type of thing that gives you a good feeling of what the rest of the show will be like in my personal opinion.
I'll retract my statement; it's not that most good anime have bad first episodes but rather, first episodes that don't set the tone right or expect you to already care about the characters before even knowing them.

I had to check wikipedia for something, and while I was there I thought to look at the kanji for some of the characters with Rikaichan. I noticed that the little merchant guy, the characters in his name are said by Rikaichan's dictionary to mean respectively: the Chinese "Extended Net" constellation, Ming (as in the dynasty), and good fortune. So I guess he's supposed to be the equivalent of Schlomo Shekelberg for Japan, in how we call the chinks the jews of Asia? I love examples of cross-culture shitposting like that. I believe so. I get the feeling it is like a game to him. That and in that moment he finally realized how close to death he was. It was a good scene. I also appreciate the directing, in how it didn't feel exaggerated or forced in how it implied his life had flashed before his eyes.
