I'd talk about Narcissu 1st and 2nd, but they're the only Japanese visual novels I've played so I can't be objective on their quality. I guess they were nice.

I've been playing Toheart 2 and Umineko. I'm enjoying them quite a lot. Toheart 2 has the perfect atmosphere for a moege, there's just the right amount of sentimentality and nostalgia to it. Umineko meanwhile is really intense. My favourite thing about it is how each chapter so far has begun with a normal situation and slowly progressed into a nightmare over the course of the story.
