 No.21906

Overrated shounenshit at its finest. Now airing the beginning of the unbearably shitty and unending Central Arc.

 No.21909

>>21906

Is anyone actually still watching this? It's literally the same every single episode:

Meet guy who cooks real good, do some test-cooking, do a cook-off, win, other guy cries about how it's impossible that MC can cook so well.

 No.21914

>>21909

I wouldn't make the thread if I weren't still watching it. I don't know why I am though. The manga is just as repetitive. The current arc is ass. The anime is even worse. Even the ecchi is pretty tame.

Momma didn't raise no quitter though. As long as they keep squeezing out this projectile diarrhea, I'll keep reading and watching along.

 No.21931

>>21909

it's nice to see the manga colorized and animated I guess and one of my friends actually watches the anime only so it's nice to be able to discuss it with him.

 No.21943

I watched the first season for the brown titty monster and was highly disappointed at how little screen time she ended up getting. Also, the concept of a school that cutthroat from day one is stupid. I don't remember the "students" ever being taught anything, only tested. It also expected kids straight out of MIDDLE school to have the knowledge and experience to perform on the level of world class chefs in exchange for things as simple as shelter from the elements. The series seemed confused as to whether the setting was actually a school or one of those Gordon Ramsay reality TV shows.

 No.21944

>>21909

Yup it's a shonen, but with food instead of bullshit fighting. I'm still watching for the cute girls, and it somehow manages to be entertaining.

 No.21945

Soma needs to just fuck Erina already.

 No.21981

I dropped it at the second season. The show literally stopped in the middle of the tournament arc, and skipped the main character's match, and started the second season with him already having won. The show completely ignored any and all pretense.about dramatic stakes.

 No.21985

Dropped after first season. It fucking starts with MC being a god of cooking, making any progress and any stakes pointless. In the tournament, he learned more about spices in a fucking month than a guy who dedicated his whole life to them and made a better spice dish. At that point, I found no reason to continue. Why the fuck are there two more season about a guy who already reached his power cap and easily curbstomps anyone? Nowdays, when I feel like watching cooking shows, I just watch Gordon Ramsay shout at people – there's a lot more drama in it than in this shit show.

 No.22188

I really liked the first episode… Music was great and it seemed like it would be fun cooking shenanigans baked around a core of romance, especially since his dad said he couldn't truly improve until he learned what it meant to cook for someone.

I forgot where I even stopped watching in the second season.

Morning omelette after fucking Erina's brains out episode when?

 No.22194

>>22188

>Morning omelette after fucking Erina's brains out episode when?

You are like little babby watch this. Slow corruption and mindbreak as a faceless fat man forces Erina to judge his semen with her God Tongue, day in and day out, until she finds it the most delicious thing ever and can't live without it and begs for him to put it in her lower mouth episode when?

I blame the Jump editors on the romance aspect of the show being dropped. They are terrified of anything even hinting at sexual relations since it could jeopardize rankings and make haste to stamp that shit out. The show/manga would honestly be a lot better if it had small elements from the harem genre in it. Maybe have Soma rotate around the girls, polishing his skills and rounding out his character as he learns to enjoy cooking expressly for a person. Handwave away any residual affections gained from that with the tried and true donkanness and there we go.

It'd be a better idea than nonstop pointless battles and MUH CENTRAL at least, I think.

Anyone here still watching? I know this show is technically shit but it's still fun.

Seeing these two get kuma'd was pretty great.

 No.25913

>>25868

I remember being intensely aroused at those two in the manga, but the anime version just didn't cut it for me. I attribute it to the shitty direction of the anime. Everything feels incredibly rushed and choppy, jumping from scene to scene at lightspeeds to hurry things along to the next intense cooking scene. There's no buildup, in other words. Those two were introduced, and within 5 minutes they had spoken all their lines and been stripped. It works in the manga because it's drawn out, there's comparatively tons of dialogue (for a shounenshit) and the simple format of a page of buildup followed by double-spread fanservice works wonders, but here that's not a thing.

It's just not good, and considering fanservice is a majority of the appeal of this otherwise trash series, things aren't looking good on the whole.

 No.25922

I don't like how it's turned in to Star Wars. If we didn't already know who Souma's dad was I wouldn't be surprised if Elina was his sister.

 No.25972

>>25868

stopped watching since the mango is more palatable

nice to see that scene colored though

what would you do to fix this food battle shounen?

>inb4 cut content just think how amazing this show would've been if it were just 1 season

 No.25993

>>25972

I think it would be better if they kept up with the quality of the first season, the newer seasons feel much more "stripped down." I remember the first season felt more exciting to watch because they at least put in effort to make the expressions from the manga feel more over the top with the music and animation.

I imagine JC Staff just stopped giving a shit since Index is coming up.

I think another reason is its hard to translate gourmet food (visual / taste / smell) -> anime (visual). Almost all of the food they make in shokugeki isn't commonly available so the connection between the viewer and the show is lost. Without that connection all that remains is an mc who keeps trying even though he loses a lot (though only to his dad) and softcore lewds.

 No.26061

Yakitate Japan successfully did a cooking battle shounen for 74 episodes, and it didn't even have the crutch of pictures of food porn, because all of the food in the show was fucking bread, but it was great the whole way through. Shokugeki just has boring fucking writing, and only survives on the fact that there are people who will happily read cooking books if you include cute anime girls in it.

 No.26063

>>26061

yakitate japan had humor which meant new jokes and gags every episode on top of having challenges for the mc / mc's team (cook bread on island without tools, cook bread in cave, cook bread but you only get ingredients you roll on from slot machine)

so if shokugeki had more character growth for mc's team while integrating some humor instead of the constant "if we don't win we'll get expelled" threat or some weird challenges it would be better?

 No.26067

>>26063

This applies to all stories, but ESPECIALLY battle anime. The question should never be "will the MC win," because we all know that the MC is going to win at the end of the day. The entertaining question should always be "HOW is the MC going to win?" The goal isn't so much to give tension to the battle, but to make the battle itself interesting. Narrative tension usually follows interesting battles without too much effort. You can look at almost anyone shounen manga that has even the slightest bit of popularity, and see that the battles are always about making the audience wonder how the main characters will win. Shokugeki has at least one clever battle in the first season, when Souma's souffles all collapse, and anyone who doesn't sell enough is going to get kicked out. No one believes for a fucking moment Souma is about to lose, but the way he ends up winning, by going straight past cooking skill and into a piece of performance art is unexpected and neat. When Deku passes the physical examination by channeling his power into the tip of his finger and still has enough power to send the ball fucking flying, it's badass. When there's an entire tournament arc lasting two season where people take turns setting plates of food in front of judges who tell them which one is better, no one could possibly give a shit. No one even fucking cheats to give the MC a set-back that he has to over come. They both just cook a plate of food, and then a panel of anime character dramatically overacts to how good it is, and then they call a winner based off who is supposed to win according to the plot.

It's fine if it's played for laughs.

It's terrible if it's taken seriously, ie :

- he's perfect at everything

- he's desired by everyone

- he has no plot-related character flaws

- the entire world exists just to worship him

- the author constantly bending the rules for his benefit

I'm looking at you : SAO, Mahouka, Overlord, Goblin Slayer, NGNL

The difference is that A) Saitama is a joke, used to wrap up story arcs, and B)Not usually the main character of a story arc. A lot of arcs are actually about the other heroes, stuggling desperately to kill one dude, completely unaware that Saitama is curb stomping Or will soon be curb stomping the big bad. There's no narrative contrivances guaranteeing other characters live, and they go through growth. If the story were literally about Saitama showing up and killing shit instantly, no one would care about it.

>>26112

Overlord still works due to their being plans that the MC executes that are interesting and unabashedly exploring the literal wish-fulfillment of the isekai concept. SAO fails miserably for taking itself seriously, while also never seriously considering how the plot might realistically play out. Overlord isn't great or anything, but it's not fucking trash.

 No.26125

>Overlord isn't great or anything, but it's not fucking trash.

It is trash though, considering how every single arc revolves around the native inhabitants worshiping Nazarick.

There's absolutely no tension whatsoever, since MC and his posse are basically gods that can steamroll any incoming threat.

 No.26140

I watch Mahouka just to see villains treated unfairly by impossible circumstances. And also for the thirsty sister. They don't even let you think there's a possibility Tatsuya can be defeated, it's kinda funny a story like that was published, let alone animated.

Your heart's in a good place, at least. The primary pull of "how" cannot be kept up in a long-running series, no matter the material. See also: Detective Conan. It dries out, or you (the viewer) burn out. In junction to the bad-yet-necessary themes and functions meant to keep a reader glued to a weekly publication, it's absolutely natural that any book that lives by cleverness tends to die or wallow in stagnation.

SnS relied far too much on cleverness as its foundation blocks. So now by the Central Arc, the readers are burnt out. They're bored. There are no important or engaging stakes and they're wanting something else to chew on. That's the flaw: by editors or by the author themself, the work has been pigeonholed and is basically awaiting the slow "It's not interesting anymore" cancellation death that's befallen all of its predecessors.

Boku no Hero Academia is a shitty premise, to be sure, but for the moment it's taken the Naruto way out by tricking readers into engaging with side characters who will never amount to anything in the long run. Thus, it's going to last a little longer.

> Overlord isn't great or anything, but it's not fucking trash.

It's genuine trash. Open world and exploration only remains interesting if the agency is in YOUR hands. When it's not, then it becomes as meandering and pointless as the millions of Let's Plays. There's no reason to care. It's really disigenuous. SAO was shit because it was a potentially great premise turned into the author's wankathon without even benefit of giving the audience a splash guard. Overlord openly expects you to stick around and enjoy the MC directly or indirectly bragging on the girth, weight, length, and pulse of his team's raging boner.

You're not wrong, I think what makes this kinda interesting is "how" the battles are won not "if". At least this show has some neat information about culinary stuff. The cute girls help out quite a bit, too.
