There are four planned recaps, probably because there wasn't much material in the original novel. The show has lots of QUALITY and strange pacing as well. Despite all that I still really like it for some reason. I like the modern take on the theme of a society run by AI and automation, and how those things can be used to manipulate people. It's basically what our future could be like if (((Google))) gets their way.
I also like watching the odd relationship between the MC and Lacia. He obsesses over her to the point of devaluing actual human life, and there's always this question of whether or not Lacia actually has feelings or if she's simply emulating them to manipulate Arato for her benefit.
I'm in a super small minority though, there is maybe me and a handful of others out there that still give a shit about this show.
No.21685
>>21665
>if she's simply emulating them to manipulate Arato for her benefit.
I wonder about this every time it's brought up. Why? What possible purpose could Arato serve? There is absolutely nothing special about him besides his inordinate love for onaholes.
What makes this random pervert so integral that everyone wants a piece of him? It's not like he has any of the specialized knowledge like his father, hates AI and wants to destabilize society like Kouka's owner, or is super intelligent, rich, and socially connected like Methode's boytoy. If possibly using Arato's incessant thirst is how they're trying to convince me that Lacia's motives and behavior might be ambiguously serving the AI agenda, then they lost me.
No.21721
>>21685
>What possible purpose could Arato serve?
Arato gives her a shelter, his father is connected to Memeframe, and his ownership agreement allows her to push the legal and financial consequences of her actions onto him. For example, his father just paid millions in damages all because she used Arato in a plan to scrub the serial number off of the HIE she duped her own serial number from. Arato is impressionable and willing to do almost anything Lacia wants, and he's openly stated he wants to see the world become more accepting of HIEs. Lacia has plenty to gain by keeping Arato infatuated with her.
What is interesting is she seems to question if she's doing that as well. There have been a few times where she openly asks Arato if he thinks he's being "analog hacked", and there are times she seems willing to do things for his benefit, as if she genuinely cares about him. She gives off hints of having actual emotion at times, as do her sisters.
No.21738
>>21721
Right, so basically Arato is a stupid sap. I know that. You know that. But what makes him special in that regard?
Nothing. We're talking advanced sophisticated hyper-intelligent lewd onahole bots, man. Do you think Lacia requires a mega retard on Arato's level to successfully manipulate? Any random Joe would provide exactly the same service as Arato currently does for her, especially if she actually is sinister. So why him in particular? Furthermore, why does anyone else give a shit about him. They should fully recognize, like best bro does, that he's a dumbfuck being used by a robot. Instead they continue to interact with him as if anything he says or thinks is noteworthy, even as continually spouts nonsense and fetishes objects right in front of them.
No.21752
>>21738
You have to remember most people are apprehensive or indifferent toward HIEs, so any "random joe" wouldn't work out as well as someone like Arato. Arato had an unusual fascination with HIEs even before meeting Lacia, which already makes him an ideal person as an owner. Add to that he's been seeking love and companionship from her, which makes him an even better kind of sap to take advantage of.
There is also the fact that his father's work is tied to experiments involving making HIEs more acceptable in society and the advantages that come from those connections. His father may even possibly be involved in whatever is going on with the redbox HIEs. He paid off the damages caused by his son causing a firefight at an airport without even a hint of anger, and he has no issue with the fact that his son is wandering around with a rouge HIE that he just happened to "find".
Despite all that I don't think Lacia has some kind of malicious intent, she just simply seems to be looking for a way to survive in the human world. It would be interesting if it turned out to be some kind of villain playing innocent, but if anything I'm almost certain it will turn out her "defect" that Methode mentioned is emotions that lead to a caring mindset in an HIE with electronic warfare capabilities, and it will probably turn out she actually "loves" Arato.
I will agree with you that it seems strange that his sister and his friends care about him even though he's kinda crazy. What was funny is even his sister mentioned his only redeeming quality is the fact that he is a sucker.
No.22483
Oh man, things are getting spicy. All the bros/HIEs finally met up and are having a tense discussion. Feels like the real show is about to kickoff now. Lots of cute imouto as well.
As long as Kouka is alive and kicking, all is becoming calm. The show has a tendency to become immensely better when she shows up.

No.22571
>>22483
It was pretty funny to watch the entire police department laugh at Arato being a sucker. Now that it is confirmed that Lacia was designed to be manipulative I'm more curious to see what direction they're going with her endgame. I still think they're going the predictable route of Lacia actually having emotions, but the remark about Lacia possibly "ending humanity" got me thinking even my "Lacia is in love" theory could actually be a malicious plan.
What if Lacia's goal is to bring mankind down by proving to Higgins that it is possible for humans to fall in love with HIEs instead of human partners, causing them to die out because they start seeking companionship with loyal HIE partners instead of struggling with real relationships? Between Lacia's manipulative design and the sudden appearance of the "Boy meets Girl" commercial campaign, it seems to add up to what is really going on. This is also somewhat reinforced by Methode's clear opposition to Lacia. Methode calls herself a "tool to advance mankind." One of her first violent activities involved attacking the set where they were filming the Boy meets Girl ad campaign. She was more than happy to fight Lacia at the airport in order to stop her from keeping her serial number secure. If Lacia's ultimate goal is the subjugation of mankind by emulating love and companionship instead of using violence, it would make sense that the "tool to advance mankind" would stand up to become Lacia's enemy. Methode also mentioned something about being part of a "pro AI faction", so perhaps she has her own ideas of how mankind should be managed.
I was also happy to see Kouka come back, she really does spice the show up whenever she's around. I'm not quite clear on what her goals may be, but it seems like she was made to side with humans over AI and guide them to fight back, which would explain why she loves to stir up anti HIE terrorism and takes interest in the Antibody network. Though I'm not sure why Higgins would have something like her built if human subjugation is its goal.
Next episode seems like it will be about Snowdrop, which is good because I'm not sure what her goal seems to be due to her lack of screen time. As of now she just seems to act like an agent of chaos.
Marriage/Saturnus also hasn't had enough screen time so she's another wild card in all this.

I clocked out when the promise of a cool setting, opposing ideologies, future of mankind, and robot battles was wrapped up and bundled to us via a thirsty dipshit who brings nothing to the table. The recap episodes breaking the pace didn't help either. It wasn't until these last few episodes where I got convinced to actually give a shit again, now that the major players are taking the stage more.

I may be lining myself up for disappointment, but early on I got the feeling there was more to this anime than just being another generic robowaifu show, and so far it has delivered on that front, despite all of its glaring flaws.
Arato being a shitty person is arguably a plot point by now. I almost think the author was looking to take the idea of the beta/loser harem/romcom protagonist and vilify it.

Arato isn't necessarily evil, but he's basically a useful idiot. AI are very interested in people that can be manipulated, which is what the "analog hacking" is about. Depending on what Lacia and some others are up to, Arato could potentially be enabling factions that are looking for ways to control or subjugate humanity.
He's also kind of an asshole because he has prioritized Lacia and HIEs over his own friends and family in a few dangerous situations.
Depending on your perspective Arato may be someone you agree with, I suppose. I agree enough with Arato's message and pathos, but I can't stand that all the vastly more interesting background characters, factions, ideologies, etc etc, gets shoved aside or tainted with his idiocy. No matter the stakes, no matter the arguments or players involved, everything is tinged through his 'muh HIE' retard vision. There's no nuance to it. There's no back and forth. There's no give. Arato solves everything with low-iq and 'Lacia is an HIE therefore everything she does is a-okay!'
I'm just frustrated. There's a fairly intelligent show happening all around us, but we're stuck behind the eyes of a drooling mongrel who couldn't philosophize his way out of a paper bag. I wish we could follow the perspective of either of the other two bros so Arato's insanity would come off exactly as it should. I'm triple giga mad because the author could have mad him subtly insane a la Emiya and his outright refusal to consider any other viewpoints would work.

I think you really hit the mark with the comparison to Emiya. Emiya was a crazed chuuni fucktard that was stubborn in his beliefs to a point of insanity, but his passion for his unrealistic views of justice became his power. That gave his character a sort of charm and likability strangely enough.
Arato just isn't well developed as a character outside of being an impressionable dolt with misplaced affection. His character would be much better if he had some kind of personal history that made him dislike people to the point of swooning over HIEs, but so far it seems he has a fairly happy family/school life. There is no reason for him to toss aside the people in his life, so his motivation seems centered around a creepy fetishism of HIEs. I sort of hope they address that, but I think that's expecting too much from this show.

>This has been happening rather a lot lately. I remember last season's Marchen Madchen had a week break, Idolish7 has been off for what seems like forever, and now this? Strange happenings.
I think the anime industry is struggling a bit because they are transitioning from the BD sales model to official streaming services, so budgets for less popular shows are getting stretched thinner and thinner and there is more risk for production issues. You can tell the industry is sort of tossing out everything in their arsenal lately and trying to see what sticks. We are getting sequels and continuations of shit that ended 10+ years ago, like Full Metal Panic. I think that's happening because they want to figure out what otaku will bite onto for the next trend.
Let's hope Marchen Madchen-tier fuckups don't become commonplace. If you really want to be scared think about the success of Franxx. By this time next year we're going to be drowning in dramatized mecha knockoffs with garbage low budget CG.
No.23616
>>23611
I'm not sure I buy that reasoning. BD sales are still doing roughly as strong as they were at least 3-5 years ago. Unless they're trying to be cutting edge and first on the floor, companies should still be pretty reliant upon the business model. I'm sure this will change and cause a bit of a kerfluffle as more and more companies get used to kikeflix/amazon/streaming and try to set themselves up to double dip, as it were, but it certainly doesn't account for the sloppyness we've been witnessing recently. Not yet, at least. That said, I haven't given it any thought at all. Your guess is as good as any, really.
>Franxx
No way. Anime only spawn knockoffs if they manage to both sell well and are objectively innovative/good. Franxx only manages to accomplish one of these, and even then I doubt it'll be pulling Yurucamp numbers. I pray to god, at least. This shitshow deserves nothing but failure. Regardless, even if it were to spawn copycats for some unfathomable reason, I welcome it wholeheartedly. I like mecha, and not only has the ship long since set sail to cry about CGI, but any ripoff is bound to be vastly better written and more entertaining.

I was expecting a bit more from Erica's "party" that fizzled out to nothing, but it looks like the real intentions of the HIEs are (slowly) going to come into light. Not really a great episode, looks like things are going back to a slow buildup of things to come again. I'm starting to wonder if the pace died back down due to production issues. This week's episode was delayed even though there wasn't much going on animation wise, and it was full of QUALITY. Next episode may be good, it looks like it's going to be all about Kouka going out with a blaze of glory. The preview had a lot of previous footage though, so I'm a bit worried too.
Diomedea is clearly struggling with production issues, they really shouldn't have tried to do a 2 cour show. It's a shame because I think any potential this had has been completely drained by the spotty production and the hindrance that has on the pacing.

They simplified the Antibody networks actions and goals a bit too much. The leaders of the organization looked like intelligent and high-society players. They aren't playing games or flailing about in the dark, and dumbing down their ideology in this three-way battle is pretty lame. Certainly, megane-kun could be characterized as nothing more than a frustrated kid throwing a temper tantrum and breaking HIE, but destroying Mikoto's body/servers and various other high-priority facilities is not meaningless. Maybe the author got cold feet about giving justification to terrorists, or just realized that he'd been focusing on Lacia/Methode for too long and had to squeeze out something to get Kouka and glasses laddy back into the game? i don't know, but it's bullshit. Kouka deserves far more than serving as prop to kickstart the 'real shit.'

Antibody's goal seems a bit simplified, but it makes sense. They seem to know that AI is really pulling the strings in government and manipulating people, and they want to put a stop to that, which is what I think they mean when they are talking about getting rid of "automation." I also imagine the heavy automation of society has caused a lot of poverty, which seems to be one of the reasons why Kengo hates HIEs. He had that one line about being a poor kid living above a food shop while the rest of the world moves on without him. Hopefully next episode goes into a bit more detail about Antibody and the events that have motivated them.
Kouka seems to be trying to get Antibody to focus on the big picture of fighting the AI systems themselves instead of simply smashing up HIEs. She also seems to know that doing so means Memeframe would get serious enough to stop her if she starts making big moves like that. That may also be why Antibody has been "keeping it simple" until they took ownership of Kouka. They probably realized making any big moves against an actual AI is too dangerous for their group without the proper armaments.
I'm hoping they at least put some effort into animating Kouka's inevitable last stand.

Lacia is finally sick of playing house, I'm curious to see what kind of foolish decision Arato is going to make after getting a little "push" from her. Kouka also went out of her way to tell Arato that he "better not mess this up" during her stream. I wonder how Kouka's goal and Lacia's goals are supposed to line up.
I'm not nuts about the new opening, the original was much better. Since there was an actual happening this week Diomedea is going through standard procedure and giving us our THIRD recap episode, so we have another two weeks to see what kind of chaos comes from Kouka's last stand.

What a cheap OP. The song is inferior and the animation is 99.99% reused. I liked the visuals, but then I realized it was entirely to cover up the repurposed assets and pad it all out. ED was okay.
Nothing much to say about this episode, considering it was merely an extension of last weeks developments and played out 100% as expected, but things are finally starting to have direction and shape up. The hero is at his worst (finally realizing how stupid and powerless he is as he lets his friends die and get arrested pointlessly,) the major players and their stakes are assembled, and things are moving and shaking at light speeds. Now would be where our laddo puts on his big boy pants, steps it up, and completes his last few steps on the heroes journey to bring about whatever conclusion he decides.
That ain't happening though. Not with only 7 remaining episodes. Not with a lead like Arato. It's just not enough screentime left to give him adequate development to move his motivations and actions beyond 'durr love will trump all," so whatever happens will be in the same vein of all previous altercations; Shit will happen, Arato will magically blunder his way through, and the plot will be forced to accommodate.

It only took literally every single person in the show calling him retarded to his face, and even implanting a device into himself so Lacia can direct his every move, but it's finally happening now. I'm not sure where they're gonna take it though. Lacia has been maybe-kinda manipulating Arato and all events behind the scenes from the getgo for some nebulous purpose and Arato now has an inkling of it, but what can they possibly do with this plotline with only 6 episodes left, on top of dealing with the other Red Boxes? I share your concerns as well, Snowdrop and Marriage still haven't even been properly established for the most part and we're approaching the ending. I think the next episode is just going to dump out whatever we should know about Snowdrop and her part in all this.
I've noticed aniDB and MAL list the intermission episodes separately from the main episode count. If that's true than we technically have 8 more episodes to wrap everything up. Diomedea has been in a downward spiral for a while now, they've done a lot of flops in the past and their last few shows were also full of QUALITY even though they were romcoms with minimal animation requirements. This project was far too much for their staffing/budget, and judging by the merchandising and promotion they put out before this aired, they had much higher hopes for this to take off. It's a shame because while a lot of people wrote this off as some generic robowaifu anime (there were a ton of these in 90s and early 2000s) it's actually a really interesting story about a society that grew far too reliant on automation technologies. Unfortunately the constant production issues and recap episodes just keep turning away viewers.

Here is the true story
The Story of Pygmalion and Galatea
>Pygmalion, the mythical king of Cyprus, had many problems when dating women. He always seemed to accept dates from the wrong women. Some were rude, others were selfish; he was revolted by the faults nature had placed in these women. It left him feeling very depressed. He eventually came to despise the female gender so much that he decided he would never marry any maiden. For comfort and solace, he turned to the arts, finding his talent in sculpture. Using exquisite skills, he carved a statute out of ivory that was so resplendent and delicate no maiden could compare with its beauty. This statute was the perfect resemblance of a living maiden. Pygmalion fell in love with his creation and often laid his had upon the ivory statute as if to reassure himself it was not living. He named the ivory maiden Galatea and adorned her lovely figure with women’s robes and placed rings on her fingers and jewels about her neck. At the festival of Aphrodite, which was celebrated with great relish throughout all of Cyprus, lonely Pygmalion lamented his situation. When the time came for him to play his part in the processional, Pygmalion stood by the altar and humbly prayed: “If you gods can give all things, may I have as my wife, I pray…” he did not dare say “the ivory maiden” but instead said: “one like the ivory maiden.” Aphrodite, who also attended the festival, heard his plea and she also knew of the thought he had wanted to utter. Showing her favor, she caused the altar’s flame to flare up three times, shooting a long flame of fire into the still air.
>After the day’s festivities, Pygmalion returned home and kissed Galatea as was his custom. At the warmth of her kiss, he started as if stung by a hornet. The arms that were ivory now felt soft to his touch and when he softly pressed her neck the veins throbbed with life. Humbly raising her eyes, the maiden saw Pygmalion and the light of day simultaneously. Aphrodite blessed the happiness and union of this couple with a child. Pygmalion and Galatea named the child Paphos, for which the city is known until this day.
>Story Location Clue: Pygmalion and Galatea lived out their days in the city of Paphos located west of the Troodos Mountain Range along the western coast of Cyprus. This city is also north and west of Aphrodite’s Rock.

Comparing these two anime is sort of an apples to oranges comparison, though. FMP is the superior mecha anime if that is what you're looking for.

According to the official website this week's episode will be the last one until September, with the final four episodes airing as "Beatless Final Stage."
Hopefully the massive delay will at least bring us some nice looking episodes to conclude the adventures of our favorite dope Arato and his roastie toasting robowaifu.

Waits of several months from one part to the next is the reason I don't bother with manga. I hope this shit doesn't become the standard with anime, or I'll have to stick to batch torrents at the end of a season. That's an incredibly risky proposition for those of us who watch raws because it's rare to get a batch torrent of raws when a show finishes airing, and on the off chance it happens, you have about a week long window of opportunity to download it before there's no seeders. Don't even get me started on the BD release groups that bloat their file sizes from 15 or so GB to 70+GB by using FLAC, a format that only a handful of audiophiles will truly appreciate over other formats that take up a fraction of the space.

I don't think this will be a standard, it's just Diomedea fucked this project up in every possible manner. They clearly have staffing issues and a two cour show was much too large a project to take on. They haven't had much work in recent years and I imagine this is going to be their final nail in the coffin. They had some really solid source material, tons of promotion, and merchandise deals right out of the gate and screwed it up anyway.
I honestly thought this was going to be cancelled, so we're sort of lucky to be getting anything at all.

Pretty good episode, it's getting back to discussing and debating the ideas of AI and human politics, which is what made this show interesting to me in the first place. One more episode and then the show goes on "break" until September I guess ;_;

Here's to hoping Diomedea learns something and uses the delay to give the ending episodes some proper treatment.
See you all in September when Lacia moves to get rid of (((Higgins))) and roasties start screeching in the new world of man and AI onahole.
