Get ready for the most anoying OP of the season.

Anime is about Gegege no Kitarou, a paranormal problem solver who answer to your plea if you send him a letter in a suspiciously old mailbox hidden in an alleyway,

First episode features a Logan Paul-eske character who releases a youkai in the city.

To be honest, doesn't seems to be any good. Won't hold high hopes for this one, but let's see if it goes somewhere.

Something like this, but youkai.

Then he gets sealed by a cute anime girl or some shit.

Then you'd have to endure stumbling upon Logan Paul h-doujin.

You know what, how about no?

Don't meme it into reality.

Speaking of youkai anime (well, kind of). Did anyone else watch Mushi-shi? I never finished it, but it was good, had a good combination of comfy atmosphere and supernatural investigation thriller.

 No.20177

Any fossil around here who has seen the original? is this a full reboot/revamp? does it have any sort of continuity?

Basically, I'm asking if I can hop fresh on-board with this and not miss a beat.

I'm jumping in head first, no info about the original whatsoever, and don't plan to

>Oldest anime adaptation is from 68

>That alone has 65 episodes

Some other anon might be more brave than I am, but I don't have the will to tackle that many episodes, let alone several other series along the years.

Researching a bit about it's recurring characters

>Nezumi Otoko

>Man-rat youkai

Reminds me of Brown Jenkins, from a lovecraftian tale. The concept can be quite horrifying. Considering this anime had it's origins in ancient folk tales from japan really brings it into perspective, on how people must have been scared shitless of youkais in the past.

I've dabbled in the series. The original manga and "Hakaba Kitarou" the 2008 anime are the same story, which has his origins, introduces the characters and has a variety of spooky tales of youkai, the afterlife, and humans getting involved. Every other adaptation is usually very loosely based off it in some cases being only similar in name and a general theme of the dead. The original anime is a lot like the original Devilman show, in that it's a complete whitewash of the insanity of the original into a child-friendly product.

Basically, I neither expect nor need for this to follow the original, since nearly none of them do, and it's already got the best adaption it's going to get. It might still be enjoyable to see a series of Kitaro dealing with more modern matters.

 No.20324

Thanks for the input. Since the series is 999999999 episodes long, with multiple iterations, I suppose one wouldn't be remiss to simply watch Hakaba Kitarou and whatever flavor of revamp they wish (including this one)? Are any of them particularly bad, to your knowledge?

I've not seen enough to really judge the lot case by case. The original series is worth watching if you're interested in ye olde anime, and a lot of the later series were aiming for the legacy it left, not the original work. Hence the legendary slow moe-fication and mascoting of Nekomusume, who I'm pretty sure only shows up a few times in the manga.

I got into the original for my love of batshit weird manga and ancient 2ch memes, and it served perfectly. If you want fairly mainstream youkai adventures, many of the various anime will probably do the job. But like in many cases, you just can't beat the original. Feel free to stick to just the manga and Hakaba Kitarou if you want the real Kitarou.

Crunchy lowering the bar yet again.

I wasn't sure what kind of show this was going to be, but I think I can see the writing on the wall now. Cheap MotW battles, reused animation, and some sort of loose plot to tie it all together. Basically, the Toei special. Are the other Gegege's like this, or is this breaking new territory?

Most of it's good but nothing special, but there were a couple recent standout episodes. There was one about a ghost train that was surprisingly dark and brutal (compared to most of the other episodes anyways) and another about a yokai cat that was fucking depressing. I'm hoping to get more episodes like those.
