What anime series could give me a similar feel to Battlestar Galactica? I want to feel hopeless in space.

Yamato just annoyed me with how many instances the ship got away with only a need for repairs.

The original Macross (However, that opinion is the result of watching the first third of Robotech).

Frontier as well. I've been describing it as "Battlestar Galactica the musical" for years.

Gall Force. The basic plot is an all female race on the run from spooky bio-mechanical aliens, after the destruction of their homeworld.

It ends with them settling on Earth and giving birth to the first humans, also.

Stop what you're doing and go watch Crest of the Stars

Space elves travel through another dimension that allows FTL, but is entirelly 2 dimensional (literally a flat plane). Their ships enter that space by creating 3-dimensional bubbles around themselves. Space battles ensue within those bubbles. The concept is neat, and it includes elves vs humans conflicts, with your MC being an elven chick, and her love interest an infiltrated human in disguise.

How is the original different? I only watched one episode of the new one and it was just cute girls shooting lasers in space.

Captain Harlock maybe? Haven't seen that for years though. Also Captian Taylor I can't remember a thing of. Go watch Frontier, a colony has to find a planet before the things that are attacking them destroy the ship.

Infinite Ryvius, that was the name. Kids trapped on a space station and they have to escape. Heroic Age was another one I dropped awhile ago. I think I might go pick them up again.

Captain Tylor felt more like a spoof on Star Trek (Years before Galaxy Quest) rather than something paralleling BSG. Although, Kirk wasn't really one for following rules either.

Ideon. Be sure to skip the last two episodes and watch the movie, "Be Invoked", instead.

They are insufferable cunts just like Tolkien's but it's part of the story's charm and conflict.

The first Macross was actually the best one. They kind of wanted to make Japanese Top Gun in space, the musical - the sequels kind of wanted to do the same thing but there is something - that I can't really put into words - that is missing from them.

but no, its not a ripoff, in They were eleven, its about a bunch of kids from different backgrounds going to do a training mission were they need to git gud at space stuff inside a fucked up ship, the twist at the start is that they were actually ten in the mission but once inside the ship, they notice they are eleven, its a pretty good movie.

And it looks like in 12 to the moon, its a space adventure of a bunch of guys/gals on the moon.

Do You Remember Love? is not a substitute for watching the original series. It begins from around the third or fourth episode with no explanation of how the ship, crew and conflict got to where they are and it completely lacks the gradual reveal of who and what the Zentradi actually are, which is one of the most compelling things about the story. It's a very, very good film that goes off in its own direction, with amazing animation and fantastic new songs, a very welcome change from most mecha retellings, which are usually just hasty recuts of the TV series, but it is at its best if you already know Macross.
