List and discuss samurai anime & manga. Who doesn't love a good katana fight?

Kenshin Tsuioku hen is best thing since sliced bread but I don't like rap, hiphop, rnb and all that so samurai champloo is automatically a shit.

Shigurui is probably the best one ever made, too bad no one ever talks about it, one of the most underrated anime of the previous decade.

Same goes for Saraiya Goyou or House of Five Leaves which is one of my favourite anime of all time. It doesn't have any flashy combat scenes like what you'd expect from anything related to samurai, it's similar to Hyouge Mono in that it deals with a harsh subject but focuses on dialogue rather than action. The MC is a very relatable character; he's an incredibly skilled samurai but can't get hired by anyone due to what seems to be social anxiety or something like that. The last episode is one of the best ones I've ever seen.

Last one I know of I'd highly recommend to anyone is Afro Samurai which most probably already know. It had some god-tier fight scenes from what I remember but if you don't really like the idea of hip-hop and other western bullshit being blend into an anime then it's not for you probably.

 No.16866

I know Majikoi is called that but it doesn't feel right to call it a series about samurai, although I haven't seen the anime series so I don't know if they've changed it up. I think the last one I saw that I could call one was Sword of the Stranger, which I thought was quite good.

It has nothing to do with samurai except maybe one or two girls with the whole "Nihon spirit" thing as their quirk. That name change is the kind of stupidity I'd expect to see from shitty video game localization companies when they do retarded things like add subtitles to the names of games that were just called Game Name (fill in number if sequel).

I find it interesting that samurai anime is pretty rare when compared to the countless D&D medieval myth anime that saturates the market.

 No.17054

I think it's just a matter of people generally being interested in the histories and cultures of other peoples and nations because you're so used to your own nation's history and know enough about it. Medieval settings probably also make for more interesting scenes action-wise since battles between samurai are all about timing and reflexes rather than brute force which was the case with duels between Europeans who wore heavy armor.

I'm not really interested in manga, I only watch anime.

I also recently started watching live-action samurai films though, not sure if anyone else is interested in that stuff. I've already seen Harakiri, Yojimbo, Sanjuro and the Sword of Doom.

It's pretty decent. It depends if you're into the old school styles of art and story telling.

Watch Seven Samurai if you haven't already. Samurai Rebellion is also good. Really any samurai movie with Mifune is a must watch.

I already knew about them of course due to their fame but haven't had the time to sit through them just yet.

>Really any samurai movie with Mifune is a must watch

Meh, I didn't really like Yojimbo and Sanjuro much because of the goofy comedy and dialogue though the latter was still watchable, it was only Yojimbo that I thought was outright bad. It seems that most Japanese live-action films have very awkward character interactions, almost as if you were watching an anime with real people which is not a good thing. I also don't like the action scenes much, aside from the fact that they lacked them in my opinion, they're also very short and are not very intense with the main character often immediately defeating his opponent by cutting once. Before this I used to think samurai films had intense, drawn out duel scenes and this was the thing that the films mainly focused on but I guess that assumption was incorrect as they seem to be dealt with almost as some sort of afterthought.

I highly enjoyed Harakiri though, it felt less like a popcorn entertainment kind of movie unlike the ones I previously mentioned.

Majikoi anime is related to the main series but you really wanna get into the VNs. Speaking of, one of the better Otome VNs takes place during the end of Edo. https://vndb.org/v1715

That show has to be one of the biggest disappointments I have ever seen, the concept of a show set in an independent trade city is interesting but the female MC being an annoying moralfag among other things ruined it.

Yeah, but now the European medieval style stories have gotten so overdone. I would like to see more proper samurai anime.

No Samurai X aka Ruroni Kenshin?

The live-action movie is better cos it's cuts out all the fluff

Same here. Isekai is the biggest offender and there's a saturation of it.
