If you get off to the idea of two dudes fucking, that is homosexual. If you get off to the idea of fucking little girls, that is pedophilic.
Another common argument is they they don't look like real children, so it's not really pedophilia. This is one I find incredibly weak as different lolicon artists have different levels of realism in their imagery, but that's not the main reason I see it as one that falls flat. The level of abstraction has little do with it. If someone wrote of book with lengthy erotic descriptions of prebuscent girls engaging in sexual activities, one would not question for a second that it's catering to pedophiles. That fact that words are as abstract as one gets, looking nothing like the content they represent, does not change that content. Yet for some reason, when the same is done in the style of manga or anime, the distinction between lolicon and pedophilia appears in western spheres.
Now there is an important difference bewteen 2D and 3D, but it's not that one is pedophilia and the other isn't. It is that of those convicted for child sex crimes such as owning CP, very few are even slightly interest in lolicon hentai. That is, criminal pedophilias tend not to like lolicon hentai and heavy lolicon hentai consumers tend not to be criminal pedophiles. Now don't misunderstand me, I fully approve of lolicon hentai both for it's appearance of being a deterrent to crime and because I enjoy it myself. I fully understand why western consumers of lolicon hentai want so fervently to say it's not pedophilia, as pedophilia is seen much more harshly in the west. While lolicon themes are accepted as merely a perverted niche within anime, manga, and hentai by the rest of Japanese society at large, in the west these things could easily get one put on a watchlist, estranged from friends and family, and legally barred from interacting with children. But I see no reason to put up such a charade here where everyone is anonymous and legal action would only be taken against the site if real CP was being spread around.

Finished the first season of Kodomo no Jikan. I didn't expect it to be as much of an emotional ride as it was but I should have seen it coming. That show was (and probably still is) infamous on the Something Awful forums to the point where if you even mentioned the name of it in the anime subforum you got banned. Point is that wouldn't have been such a point of contention if it was just a loli fanservice anime or just a serious drama, but since it was on the border between both, people would argue about it.
