A very long time ago, maybe 7 years ago or so, I tried the Abena diapers and they were great for the time. Much better than the store brand when I finally managed to order a package. Even up to now, I still have one diaper from that time packed away. However, I recently ordered a new pack and the plastic backing was much weaker than the old diaper. When taping, I felt like I was going to rip the plastic or the tape off. It held itself together and I haven't had any rips yet, but the feeling I get from taping is still unnerving like I'm taping up a store brand diaper. The plastic itself was thinner too. I remember a long time ago, they tried switching to cloth-only, but because of an initial outlash, they backed out on it and continued to produce both plastic and cloth. I guess they felt the plastic was costing them more than the cloth. They seemed to have found a way to reduce how much plastic is present in their current diaper. I guess the absorbency is still fine, but I don't think the SAP holds itself in place as much as it used to before, so it sags and falls apart much faster when used. I'm not sure if I'm getting the same oily smell you are. Mine just smell sterile. This is all my recent experience with the current Abena diapers. I'm going to finish using it, but I won't order anymore Abena diapers after this pack finishes.
At the moment, the only medical-grade diaper that I find is worth anyone's time and money are Confidry 24/7s. The fit, the tapes, the material, the odor control, and the absorbency have all been great to me and I feel that it rivals or even does much better than the Abena diapers from 7 years ago. In terms of function too, I find that they rival ABDL diapers pretty well and perform better than some of them. Of course the ABDL will win in designs, but I'm someone that prefers plain white minimalism, so a lack of designs isn't offputting to me. As it is right now, my top diapers would be Confidrys, Rearz, and ABU Simples. I would try the A+ diapers from XP Medical since they seem to base their design around Confidrys, but they still seem to be sold out last time I checked.
Sorry if I was long-winded in this post. I was just giving my experience about it to see if it could help you any in the future.
