Migrant Crisis 2.0: More than 1,350 migrants land on Greek islands last weekend

Greece’s Coast Guard reported that over 1,350 migrants landed on the country’s various islands in the Aegean Sea over the weekend. The news comes as migrant facilities operating on the Greek islands already face massive overcrowding and growing violence.

According to the Greek Coast Guard, between Friday and Monday morning, 658 migrants were picked up while another 730 migrants succeeded in landing on the shores of one of the Aegean islands not far from Turkey, Courrier International reports.

The announcement comes as groupings of hundreds and hundreds of illegal migrants continue to invade Greek shores, only adding to the migrants who already call the overflowing migrant facilities across the county home.

Currently, close to 90,000 migrants are housed in more than 50 camps located across Greece’s mainland, five Aegean islands, and northern frontiers.

The situation has become so dire at camps located across the Greek Islands, that authorities have begun transporting 20,000 migrants housed at facilities across the islands to camps on the Greek mainland.

News of the arrival of 20,000 additional foreigners – many of the Muslims – onto the Greek mainland has angered many. To express their discontent, one group which calls itself United Macedonia organized a pork, beer, and wine barbeque outside of camp that houses migrants.

In 2019, 22,000 migrants illegally entered Greece, the highest number of new arrivals since the peak of the migrant crisis in 2015-2016.

The Greek government, who has largely been left to deal with the problem by itself, has called on the European Union to sanction member states like Poland, Hungary, and the Czech Republic who’ve consistently refused to take in any newly arrived migrants.

The Greek government argues that the Central European policies place an unfair burden on frontline EU states like Greece, Italy, and Spain.

GOP Senators Seek Treasury ‘Suspicious Activity Reports’ on Ukraine and Hunter Biden

Republican lawmakers sent a letter to the United States Treasury to inquire about “suspicious activity reports” related to former Vice President Joe Biden’s son, Hunter Biden, and his employment with Ukrainian energy empire Burisma.

Reuters reported on the November 15 letter sent by Senate Finance Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley and Ron Johnson, chairman of the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, to Ken Blanco, the director of the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network:

The letter, seen by Reuters on Friday, seeks “suspicious activity reports,” or documents that financial institutions file with the department’s Financial Crimes Enforcement Network when a case of money laundering or fraud is suspected.

It was unclear if any such reports exist regarding Hunter Biden, the former vice president’s son. There letter gave no evidence that Hunter Biden engaged in suspicious activity that would have been covered by such reports.

The agency does not comment on the reports, a spokesman said. Fincen, as the network is known, collects more than 2 million such reports each year, and they are tipsheets that make no findings on whether illegal activity has occurred.

The letter is part of an effort in Congress to defend President Donald Trump for what Republicans say is a partisan effort by Democrats to make a phone call between Trump and Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky where the Bidens’ Ukrainian dealings were discussed an impeachable offense.

The lawmakers set a Dec. 5 deadline for Treasury to respond to the request.

Reuters noted in its report that Hunter Biden served on the board of directors for Burisima, which has been investigated for corruption. The younger Biden served on the board while Joe Biden was vice president of the United States.

“In the letter, the senators said Burisma was paying Hunter Biden as much as $50,000 a month and their panels were investigating ‘potentially improper actions by the Obama administration with respect to Burisma Holdings and Ukraine,’” Reuters reported.

In the final paragraph of the Reuters report, another investigation is revealed: Grassley and Johnson have asked the U.S. National Archives and Records Administration for records of a 2016 White House meeting between Obama administration officials, representatives of the Ukrainian government, and officials from the Democratic National Committee.

The Trump FCC has made it abundantly clear it isn’t particularly keen on state, city, or local rights, especially when they interfere with AT&T, Verizon, and Comcast’s ability to make a buck. The problem: when the FCC neutered its ability to police the telecom sector at lobbyist request as part of the net neutrality repeal, it may have ironically obliterated its authority to tell states or cities what they can do.

This week, the FCC was sued by a broad coalition of cities which say they’ve had enough. Dozens of states have joined forces to sue the FCC over an August ruling cities say not only limit how much money cities can collect for things like environmental impact reviews on cell tower placement, but hamstrings their ability to stand up to giants like AT&T and Verizon on pretty much any issue of substance. The FCC claimed the changes were necessary to accelerate our positioning in the “race to 5G,” though cities say the changes are little more than a giant gift to the nation’s biggest telecom conglomerates:

Morocco Spending Over $10 Billion On New American Arms: Apaches, F-16Vs, Smart Bombs and More

The U.S. State Department has approved a $4.25 billion arms package to the Moroccan armed forces including 36 AH-64E Apache heavyweight attack helicopters and associated weapons and maintenance equipment. The Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA), a Pentagon bureau in charge of overseeing arms exports, stated regarding the sale: “This proposed sale will support the foreign policy and national security of the United States by helping to improve the security of a major Non-NATO ally that is an important force for political stability and economic progress in North Africa… The proposed sale will improve Morocco's capability to meet current and future threats, and will enhance interoperability with U.S. forces and other allied forces. Morocco will use the enhanced capability to strengthen its homeland defence and provide close air support to its forces.”

Morocco has emerged as Africa’s leading client for U.S. arms, a position previously held by Egypt until the overthrow of its Western backed government in 2013. Other prolific Moroccan purchases included a $1 billion contract announced in September for bomb kits and TOW missiles, and a prior $3.78 billion contract for 25 F-16V Viper fighter jets. Alongside other more minor contracts, this brings recent Moroccan arms purchases from the United States to over $10 billion. While the U.S. provides Morocco with military aid, this amounts to just $10 million annually - around 0.1% of the cost of new weapons systems being acquired. It is uncertain why Morocco has so drastically increased its arms acquisitions, but the modernisation of neighbouring Algeria’s armed forces is one possible explanation. Another is the growing efforts by the Donald Trump administration to bolster the American defence sector by placing pressure on overseas partners to purchase more American weapons.

South Africa blocks arms sales to Saudi and UAE in inspection row

South Africa is blocking arms sales to countries including Saudi Arabia and the UAE in an inspections dispute, endangering billions of dollars of business and thousands of jobs in its struggling defence sector, according to industry officials, Reuters reports.

The dispute centres on a clause in export documents that requires foreign customers to pledge not to transfer weapons to third parties and to allow South African officials to inspect their facilities to verify compliance, according to the four officials as well as letters obtained by Reuters.

Officials at major South African defence groups Denel and Rheinmetall Denel Munition (RDM) said the dispute was holding up their exports, as did a third big defence company which asked not to be named. RDM said some of its exports to the Middle East had not been approved since March.

Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, which account for at least a third of South Africa’s arms exports and are engaged in a war in Yemen, have rejected the inspections which they consider a violation of their sovereignty, the sources said.

Oman and Algeria have also refused inspections and seen their imports from South Africa blocked, the industry officials added.

Government officials in Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Oman and Algeria did not respond to emails and phone calls from Reuters seeking comment, nor did their embassies in South Africa.

Asked about the inspection clause issue, Ezra Jele, South Africa’s director for conventional arms control in the defence ministry, said that authorities considered criteria including human rights, regional conflict, risk of diversion, UN Security Council resolutions and national interest when evaluating applications for export permits.

He did not comment on specific cases.

The Aerospace, Maritime and Defence Industries Association of South Africa (AMD) says the dispute could threaten the sector’s survival.

“We’ve got one clause that’s disabling us from exporting 25 billion rand ($1.7 billion) worth of value today, right now,” Simphiwe Hamilton, the head of the AMD, told Reuters.

The industry body estimates the export blocks put an additional 50 to 60 billion rand in future business at risk and could cause the loss of up to 9,000 jobs at defence firms and supporting industries.
