Hi all. Months ago, I picked up the 2007 ATTWT remix on CD, and while I thought the detail completely floors the original release, the brickwalled "dynamics" were a bit disappointing. As I went through the process of making an extended album out of ATTWT, I decided to re-EQ all of the songs to have universal sonics. What I didn't realize until I finished my first re-EQ, was that not only the characteristics of the sound appeared more natural, but dynamic range was somehow INCREASED.

Here's my remaster of Down and Out, which sounded brittle on the 2007 remaster in my opinion. Detail is lost on the way to 8chan, but there's no other way around that for me now. What do you guys think?

It was the 2000s. The Loudness War was in full swing. While I prefer the clarity of most of the 2007 remasters, I'll admit the originals had better dynamics (and I'm a sucker for dynamic range).

Trick and Duke seem to be the only albums where I whole-heartily prefer the originals. I'm listening to a needle drop rip of an original Trick pressing I did months back as I type and it's not bad. It's just mastered a bit quietly to fit in all 51 minutes on a single disc. For everything else I prefer the 2007 mixes, and to be honest I don't notice any negligible difference for the Hugh Padgham albums. I will admit Calling All Stations was improved in 2007, with sweeter, analog-like midrange and less claustrophobic than the original.

Every Halloween I listen to Genesis 1983; Home by the Sea is the obvious connection, but Mama is pretty spooky too. Even though the rest of the album isn't that dark, it just feels like October to me.

What are your favorite spooky songs in the Genesis family? Intruder? Darktown? Any of Steve's various vampire-themed songs? Go wild.

The Musical Box is the spookiest the Genesis crew has ever got to me, but Mama, In the Air Tonight, the Home by the Sea suite and Intruder are not too far behind.

I still haven't listened to Hackett solo, but I'm planning to do it soon.

Almost forgot Genesis the album celebrated its 35th birthday a few days ago, and although I'm late to the occasion I'm listening to my vintage US Atlantic LP to celebrate. It just might be my favorite of 1980s-era Genesis, surpassing the mighty Duke for me.

Hello /genesis/ I'm the guy running the next 8chan cup here, taking over TNA the guy who does 8chanmania

Next January is the next 8chan Cup so I'm making this thread for you guys to get your team together

For you who don't know the 8chan Cup or the Infinity Cup as it's also been known as is a tournament of CPU soccer players playing each other, representing their board for glory above the other ones and such

What I'm going to need is a roster of 20 Players with their Positions, at least 2 of which needing to be Goalkeepers. As well as a roster I'm going to need a Kit design or two decided by you, a team logo, an Anthem and Goalhorns

What would be nice is the kit done in the format for direct import into the game of which I'm Using Pro Evolution Soccer 2017, as well as Medals for players, and skills, as well as any special imports for the players if you're able to muster it

Medals are a system the 8cup uses to make star players, of which regular players are rated 77 all round and GKs are 70

Unlike the last one there will be 3 teirs of Medals, Bronze, Silver and Gold. Bronze is 85 all round, Silver is 92 and Gold is 99, and each team can have 2 of each medaled players (2 bronze players, 2 silver and 2 gold).

Skills are the same as last time and are entirely optional as I can just put them in

WHEN YOU GUYS HAVE DECIDED YOUR TEAM PLEASE MAKE A THREAD TITLED "/genesis/ 8cup4 thread" or something similar WITH THOSE STATISTICS ON THE /8cup/ BOARD

THE TEAM IS DUE ON OCTOBER 31st

And with that lets have some fun mates

>>>/8cup/

Peter's not the best musician, but he's the best artist when he's not trying too hard to be an artist (see: everything he's done since 2002 while not finishing I/O). He could also be called the best songwriter, though it's 50/50 between him and Tony.

Best musician is either Steve or Phil.

It's probably the devil, but I don't think it's that big a deal. It doesn't screw over guys like Peter who are already richer than god, but I don't use Spotify for any Genesis-related stuff since I just get those albums legitimately. The artists it fucks over are the guys you've never heard of, and those are the type of people I use Spotify for since it's a great platform to discover new, underground music.

But let's be real, it's not like Spotify is much worse for artists than Napster was or torrents are, and I torrent a ton of shit. The only difference is that everyone using those means to listen to music knows they're doing so illegitimately, while Spotify presents itself as a legitimate medium and the majority of listeners are blissfully ignorant and believe Spotify's rosy image is true.

I've always loved the sound of the Yamaha CP-70, but I never realized what the model and make of that keyboard was until just now. It has such a pretty and cute sound.

I've also modified a well-known tune around these parts to make it sound like a Tony Banks solo on the CP70 circa 1978 to 1980. I was pretty surprised how good it sounds.

I'm attempting to organize a playlist that ultimately becomes an expanded version of And Then There Were Three. There are connections to Tony Banks' solo work from around the period to modern-day. Also some tracks from the Undertale soundtrack serve as interludes. Here's the sequencing at the moment. Suggestions are welcome.

1. Renaissance (Tony Banks, Five)

2. Down and Out

3. From the Undertow (Tony Banks, A Curious Feeling)

4. Undertow

5. Ballad of Big

6. Snowy (Toby Fox)

7. Snowbound

8. Burning Rope

9. For a While (Tony Banks, A Curious Feeling)

10. Deep in the Motherlode

11. Many Too Many

12. The Waters of Lethe (Tony Banks, A Curious Feeling)

13. Scenes from a Night's Dream

14. The Day the Light Went Out (B-side)

15. Long Elevator (Toby Fox)

16. Say It's Alright Joe

17. Vancouver (B-side)

18. Barrier (Toby Fox)

19. The Lady Lies

20. Memory (Toby Fox)

21. Follow You Follow Me

I've also debated putting in "Inside and Out" because it was the American B-side to "Follow You Follow Me," but it was ultimately from the Wind and Wuthering era and featured Steve Hackett.

I revisited the record store I've talked about at >>426 and they had this. A Japanese Super High Material CD of the 2007 ATTWT. This was the only copy they had of the album at the store then, and there is very little info out there with regards to this pressing, other that it was a limited run and is now OOP. This SHM-CD goes for at least $40 online and I managed to snag it for an even lower price at the store.

As far as sound quality goes, this is the best version of the 2007 remix I've ever heard, as far as ATTWT goes, but then again, it's the 2007 remix, not the original 1978 mix which I found unimpressive on the Atlantic LP I mentioned at >>424. I never heard the recent LP reissues cut from the remixes which were supposedly free of the "loudness war." My SHM-CD of "And Then..." doesn't reduce the dynamic range compression of Spotify's copy, but there is more detail and transparency all-around, even when comparing Spotify's lossy to the SHM-CD rip compressed to lossy. I don't know how it compares to a lossless CD rip of the US or UK 2007 standard CDs, though, but nonetheless a cool find.

>>431

Just a little update. The revised sequencing has "Scenes From a Night's Dream" and "The Day the Light Went Out" reversed in order. "Renaissance" is moved in between "Snowbound" and "Burning Rope." Add "Prelude to a Million Years" to the beginning before "Down and Out." I feel it's more concise this way and listened to it in that order several times over the weekend. It's probably the best Genesis album never made.

Someone brought it up in >>422, so we might as well give it its own thread.

Tony released a new album last month. In case you don't know because his attempt to guilt you into following his solo career was not successful, this is his third in a series of orchestral albums. I haven't listened to Five yet, but I liked his other classical albums a bit and I've heard good things about this one. Be warned, it's none of that 90s Steve Hackett-esque, neo-classical shit, this is real classical music, so if you don't like that, you won't like this.

Listened to it on Spotify and I have to say t's a beautiful album. I've ordered the CD of it this morning so I can have a physical, and lossless copy, plus to support Mr. Banks as I don't think he has reached this peak since the mid-to-late-70s.

I like how the production on this album was unorthodox for a classical album, like recording different parts of the orchestra separately and layering them together in post, like a rock record. Tony may deny that "Renaissance" was based on an old Genesis rehearsal session, but I noticed similarities in the melodies to "Burning Rope" on ...and Then There Were Three....

I'm looking forward to a possible Four album to come out 10 years from now and be blown away again tenfold.

Trick of the Tail is at least a 7/10 for me, but I can see the everlasting appeal of it. If it isn't the best Genesis album, it's the comfiest album of theirs. I love the cute fantasy aesthetic, it feels somewhat predictive of a classic Nineties JRPG at points, in the Seventies. Truth be told, VG composers like Koji Kondo were heavily influenced by the progressive rock of the Seventies. Go figure. I can't place my finger on which specific Genesis album is my favorite, but there's no denying ATOTT is a strong choice.

This is, bar none, the most emotional and heart-breaking Genesis has ever been. I've been recently going through family trauma, and this song perfectly connects with my feelings. Forget Afterglow, Alone Tonight, Undertow, Ripples, Please Don't Ask, or even Undertale. Phil's voice is so beautiful yet his performance here, in his 40s, sounds so destroyed and mauled. Peter Gabriel can never pull off a song like this.

Of all the songs I chose not to include this song in my customized version of We Can't Dance which removes the songs I personally consider filler, this is easily the best. While Never A Time is just Throwing It All Away but worse and Hold On My Heart is just In Too Deep but more compelling, Since I Lost You is a song which objectively has nothing wrong with it. You could argue it suffers from sounding too much like solo Phil but not enough like Genesis, and I wouldn't disagree that it might sound like that, I would argue it's a better Phil ballad than anything that came after his first two solo albums. That chorus easily could have sounded whiny as fuck if Phil decided to phone it in, but as you said, he's ace in this song.

I don't know that Peter could never do a song like this, but he definitely never would. Pete always lacked the confidence to scale back on the music and let his voice take command in a song meant to evoke these emotions. He's flirted with it sometimes - Don't Give Up sort of tries this and fails, the more minimalist live versions of Here Comes the Flood do it with more success. He could probably knock the chorus of Since I Lost You out of the park, but he would never touch those verses.

He's entitled to his own opinion, but I've lost a bit of respect for him. His own songs about loss aren't particularly any better, Undertow is forced pretentious garbage on repeats and Afterglow lost any sort of impact after that computer game about funny skeletons. I'm sorry, Tony.

Fading Lights was when Tony's gibberish lyrics actually worked the best. When he described what that song meant in the No Admittance documentary, I started to understand the method to his madness because he attempts to put into words feelings that don't have words. His word salad really only works in emotional songs like Fading Lights and Afterglow while they're craptastic in narrative songs like Firth of Fifth and Silver Rainbow. You have to have gone through exactly what Tony is getting at in his songs in order to understand him; maybe that's objectively had songwriting, but when it hits you, it really hits you. The retarded thing about Undertale fans co-opting Afterglow is that they saw a narrative in the song that wasn't really there; it's just Tony's cryptically roundabout way of expressing his thoughts.

Undertow is fairly straightforward as far as Tony lyrics go. I'm surprised you don't like it.

His opinions are weird sometimes, he seems to not like Selling England by the Pound while Duke is his favorite album. I didn't find Undertow of Afterglow to be pretentious, but I would agree if you mentioned the lyrics to songs like Time Table or Firth of Fifth.
